younger drivers

ok im basically after the opnion of the older driver (30+)

Im sure we have all noticed recently that the age of the new supra owner (including myself) is lowering into the 'boy racer' age range.

I just wonder what do you older guy's think of this. Are you worried about the reputation of the car being ruined? worried bout insurance being put up due to the owners? Worried that many supra's will be ruined, due to poor maintence (runing on minimum money), crashes and other reasons.

The reason i ask is, i had to do a job in another part of england, and a young driver in a supra done a really stupid overtaking manover, he looked real young 20 or early 20's.

I dont really give my car any pushing (no NA jokes!! :p)unless in straight line,i have learnt my lesson, and never overtake in stupid places as its a big car.

Just intersted in peoples views

Also im a NA, i had a volvo 850 giving me some on dual carriageway would he have me i didnt play he looked fast lol

As only a young'n too I think the supe is in range of most 'kids' I was hoping to be 1 of few young owners but it seems like everyone can get one now! that actually puts me off buying the car as they will get ruined and get riced up! not taken care of and common which I was hoping to have something pretty rare, I still see more skylines than soop's which is a good thing as this shows that the skylines are much more common, but I reckon the 30+ guys will probably think the same as me?

I know you asked for a 30+ opinion, but I thought i'd add my own:baa:

Well just for info I'm 25 and am lucky enough to have ahad a few nice car's in my time.

To be honest I don't think people in any age range have any reason to be concerned as I don't think things will get too bad...:)

The reason I say this is because if you look at other cars which have become cheap enough for younger drivers to own such as the 300ZX which are also very quick etc.

The fact remains that to insure and run a car like that you need some money behind you and most youngsters won't have it. The ones that do will probably have to sacrifice a lot to get it and will therefore hopefully be of a better mentality than your standard Max Power kid. :innocent:

All IMHO obviously...:D

It doesn't bother me if younger guys get Supras although I think it's a shame that prices are now low enough that just about anyone can afford to buy one. Whether they can run and maintain one properly is another thing though.

I've really noticed the difference in the profile of Supra owners on here in the last year or so, and not for the better.

Trouble is some people just can't......:sly: :D

I've been through an Elise a Tuscan and the Soop in 3 years.

I spose it's all about starting your own company and then getting as much cash as possible :p

I ain't no rich kid either I was born and bred in Dagenham of all places but just got lucky and started my business at the right time I guess.:)

I reckon most younger people now just spend most of there money on motors instead of thinking about houses and stuff.

Well I would hope to think its more about the type of driver not how old they are. I'm in the process of buying a supra tt because I believe it is unbeatable in terms of purchase price/performance/reliability and everyday usability. The fact that it looks great is a bonus. I wouldn't deny i'll enjoy showing off in it, but I'm not buying it because it'll get 'nuff respect' from the local barry boys, or whoever...

The supra may be reasonable value in terms of purchase price, but the same can't be said for running costs. Sub 20mpg, very high insurance costs etc..

Personally I can't stand cheap, poorly modified cars (novas, saxos, astras and so on). Why people can't just save the money and look to buy a better car in the first place is beyond me. I've been driving around in a bog standard 306 diesel for the last 3 years. Had I modified it I would have looked like an idiot. If these sorts of owners get their hand on supras then god help us. So here's hoping they dont. :)

Joe

ps: I'm 21

Well I dont have any problem with anyone any age, when I bought my first Supra in 97 people used to say "thats an old mans car"

These days I seem to get respect and because of my youthful good looks I can now get away with pretending to be younger and owning a Supra he he.

I think the younger people have bought a more fun element into Supras, you are always up for a good laugh rather than the Hardcore of owners that were just happy to sit in a car park and peer into their polished engine.

there is good and bad owners of all ages.

I think Supra ownership has become more diverse and therefore better...no more old man attitudes anymore.

and for the older people.....they are not old they are middle youth or whatever and are just as much fun, well some of them....

:p

Lol!:p

Well, I just popped down to the seafront to see what was there, and 90% of the cars were jap! 2 s14's, 1 s13, 3 celica's, 2 mitsi gto's, and wait for it....................... 7 skylines!!!!! all gts's me thinks and the owners all looked under 25, so owners of this type of car are much much lower, quite glad I didnt see any supe's!

I completely agree your comments Joe, why oh why do they spend £1000's on crap? theres just no point!

Guest suprasaint

Ok... I've recently become the proud owner of a mkiv Supra, and I love it. I'm only 22, never thought i'd realistically get one for a while but things took a turn for the better and I got one. I feel I'm in an older more mature car. The age of a Supra owner doesnt matter, we all love the supra and anyone who can afford the running cost of one will show the supra the respect it deserves.

But... you do get the odd idiot, and it isnt always us youngins!

Apologies if theres any cock-up with the post...its my first one! eek!

all i can say is that not many young drivers can afford to get a £10 grand loan out and pay it bk ( ok bit by bit but)

the amount of Novas and Saxos etc i see going round

my other half is 21............. its a strain on the old ££££'s but he is the only one in newark to own a supra, its a big acchevment to afford such a car and pay the insurance on it as well,

which is not cheap

yeah i agree there are many idiots out there who think that having a fast car is great and then wrap it round the 1st lamp post or tree they see, i ve seen what happens ( father is a paramedic officer)

hey to the new person suprasaint :)

ne way cheers

 :conf:

Ps it a TT

I woud l have to agree, it does'nt matter about the age. It is about the type of owner. I think the younger Supra owners have probably done the whole Max Power thing and have now decided to progress to a real sports car.

Hopefully if you were given the wisdom to pick a Supra you were also given the wisdom to respect it, look after it and not act like an idiot. My previous car was an Astra 2.2sri that I spent about £6000 on for measley gains and to be honest it was still a poor attempt at a sportscar.

I thank the person who mentioned Supra to me as I had never really given it much thought before. However after he mentioned it to me and I did abit of research. It was definiteltythe car to have, at the end of the day where can you buy a car with blistering performance and looks so reasonably priced.

I paid £12000 for my 1994 Supra TT GZ, some people (not supra owners) may think that is alot of money but you will struggle to find a car that matches the Supra and at £12000 was a bargain to me. I am 30 now but hell if I could of afforded it I would of bought a Supra years ago and saved wasting all the money on other cars.

At the end of the day, Japanese Cars are very popular now due to looks, performance, reliability etc, and if you going to buy a Jap car and you can afford it buy the best. So go easy on the young guys for owning Supras, all it means is they realised sooner than I did just how fantastic the Supra is.

Bloody Hell, that was long, I better go to bed, us old guys dont have as much energy as you younger ones.

Hi WSB

Well I think I come into the range of older driver, being 46, and I really don't think that anything has changed over the years.

I had my first XJ6 at 19, an XJ12 at 20 and various 13 second 1/4 mile cars up to and well beyond 25. Once a boy racer, always one as far as I'm concerned, why do you think I run a Supra :D

The only difference these days is that I can see the danger in the crazy speeds and so drive, probably, with a bit more care than I did when I was 20. Only a bit mind you :) That and the poxy speed cameras :(

How can I criticise young people for buying decent cars, when I was doing the self same thing.

When I was younger most of my contemporaries were souping up Mk1 Cortinas and Escorts, yeah big deal, all show and no go :)

I got seduced by V8 power in a big way, but never regretted the amount it cost in petrol or insurance.

I'm not really worried about the values of Supras, if I wanted an investment I'd have bought a painting :)

Considering the price of so many lesser, but far more expensive, cars the Supra is a real bargain, long may it remain so.

Mine's not a status symbol, although I'm still really surprised at how many people, with a lot more expensive cars than me, say to me that business must be booming :D

I bought mine for 2 things, cheap power and reliability. If it wasn't a daily driver I'd have a TVR Griffith, but I'm not willing to drive a piece of sh*t all week in order to have a fun weekend car.

As for insurance, it has always been a ripoff, always will be, but you youngsters always pay a premium (pun intended) over us old(er) guys :D

Theres a lot of Supras around so I'm not really worried about a few written off ones. If you want to see what makes me sad ( I honestly can't look for too long without getting REALLY depressed) go to http://www.carsinbarns.com and look under Superbirds and Daytonas

Now that IS fcuking sad

Well i'm 27 I had my first Supe when I was 22 it was NA and it got nicked so with that in mind I went for a cars that wouldn't, but everytime I saw another Supra i thought its no good i've gotta get another.

So for the last 12 months i've been the proud owner of a GZ TT and wouldn't swop it for anything. I agree that insurance prices most Supra Wannabee's out of the market but the fact those who do take that step are so worried to lose that magical no claims hat they drive with a bit of consideration.

As for young drivers lowering the exclusiveness of Supra's I think not. The fact of how many people are members of MKIVSUPRA.net shows that the majority are enthusiasts not chavs.

Just kidding :D

PMSL ........

not sure that age alone plays a part in these cars getting 'riced' (just look at PaulE ! :D ) but also the quality/maturity of the drivers involved. older people do some crazy stuff too but i guess are 'generally' slightly more circumspect.

there is possibly a real danger that the inherent value of the car may suffer as a direct result of younger ages and cheaper prices but i don't think there is much anyone can do about that.

WSB, you do go on alot about owning a Supra at a young age, I'm not quite sure why? Its no big deal.

If some of the Supra's are left to become crap box's then it means the good ones will hold their price and be more sort after.

:) :moo:

Surely thats a good thing, why should all the best things in life be rationed out by money?

Just because you've got money it doesn't automatically mean that you've got good taste or that you're destined to have all the good things in life while the rest of us drive around in sh*t heaps.

Some Supras, IMHO, have been ruined by (extremely expensive) excessive bodykits and the like (others look brilliant!), but this certainly wouldn't have been done by the young bloke who can just about afford a Supra now that the prices have dropped. :)

At the end of the day, on one hand, you're going to get the Max power brigade who'll spend £30000 on a Saxo or Nova to make it the "best" they can, and on the other one, those with a bit more sense who go out and buy a Supra for a lot less money :D

Just because a Supra is "cheap" it doesn't make it a bad car, nor does it make everthing more expensive, a good car. For what I paid for mine, I could have bought a brand new "normal" boring car.

Yeah that was fcuking likely :D

Totally agree. I hate the aftermarket bodykits that go on the Supra's, just makes them look so cheap and tacky!

If you stick a bodykit on a Porsche, that looks cheap and tacky, because there is such a mismatch between the original design and the kit. But, imo, the supra already looks kind of outrageous. It's not exactly subtle, is it? Unmodified, it looks like a cartoon car, a rocket-ship on wheels, so a bodykit is more in keeping than it might be with some other cars.

I think half the fun of having a bodykitted one is it's OTT vulgarity - it's a great help in offending all the people who think that you should know better. :)

Hi Guys

Personally i have been dreaming of owning a supra since the mk4 first year in uk. I went to a toyota garage just to look at one at the launch was love a first site. I am now 33 and have just purchased my first one at the end of last year. I used the car as a goal to aim for. I knew befor i could get one i would have to be secure in work, financal, home and family then playtime with car.

i made it lol. just.

so as far as age, condition, speed or bling and style of driving of other peeps in there cars i don't mind. I own mine Im happy and i wish every one gets to meet there goals some day.

its your car do what you want you earnt it, just enjoy whatever the age.:)
