TT or not TT that is my question !!!!

Hello all, how are you doing ? I am a newbie, please be gentle with me, I wish to obtain your words of advice and wisdom on the subject of which to go for an N/A or a TT.

I currently have an FTO but cannot help drooling over any Supra that I see.

:p

I know that a TT will give me what I want power and performance wise, but I am worried about turbo's blowing etc etc.

Will the N/A give me a big grin or will it be a similar experience to the FTO or an ST202 Celica that I used to drive ?

I really would like an Aerotop but finding a Twin Turbo Aerotop is like finding hens teeth - I do not want to be dissapointed by purchasing the N/A Aerotop and finding that it does not give me anymore than the Celica or FTO.

:(

Many thanks for your patience.

Hello!

As an NA aerotop owner I am not disappointed with its performance and lets face it the "pose" factor is huge. I've never driven a TT but have been out in one and the difference in acceleration between the two is pretty noticeable. I suppose the best way forward for you is to go out in one and see for yourself. :)

Both versions will be faster that what you drove previously.

The turbos are strong, good for 100k miles and many go even further, they only blow-up premauterely when people max the boost out of them. If you find a mid (50k) example, UK or J-Spec you'll be find for years, and i'd even say you would with 100k milers. too.

Good luck in your hunt for the hens teeth, there are some out there... somewhere

Go TT tho ;)

TT all the way...:)

I'm not saying the N/A is a bad car just that as you get into the scene and start going to meets etc, you may find yourself wishing you had got the TT after all if you buy an N/A.

There has been quite a few threads on here over time from people in that very position enquiring about converting a N/A to TT. Everyone agrees it's a lot cheaper to have just bought the TT in the first place.

Cheers:cool:

Do you want to go fast, or do you want open top motoring?

If you're happy to pootle and pose then get the N/A aerotop, (I'm sorry N/A owners:D) if you want shattering performance from a standard car, with lots more easily obtainable, then its no contest, TT all the way.

Aerotops are really cool, TT ones especially, but don't get too hung up on it, remember its the UK we're living in.

I guarantee the top will spend more time ON the car than OFF :)

Saying that, when its sunny, I really miss my MR2 T-Tops :(

I think Uncle Kevs advice had to be the best there http://www.shaunssite.co.uk/forum/images/smiles/new_notworthy.gif

Also Im lucky enough to be able to drive both, but after driving the TT for over a year, even after now only driving the NA for the last 4 months, it still feels slow in comparison to the TT. Once you drive a TT your expectations really do raise the bar.

The N/A is faster than the FTO so if you're happy with your current performance then I'm pretty certain you'll be happy with a nat-asp aero top.

Of course the TT will be faster although my non modded car doesn't feel as "blisteringly" fast as many owners report.

The turbos will last a long time if cared for. i.e. idling after a fast run etc.

Thanks for all your replies, its nice to see a forum that actually communicates well.

I am going to take Uncle Kevs advice initially and try out the n/a aerotop, see what the grin factor is before buying that red aerotop tt in the trader :D

Thanks again folks and hope to speak with you all again soonest.

As an N/A aero owner that is in the middle of sorting out a TT conversion then I would say that if you don't mind the hassle have a look around for a nicely priced N/A aero. If you like a nice interior get that leathered up. Put your own individual ICE in. Spend a bit of cash on the exterior if kits are your thing. Do the big brake conversion (which requires 17" wheels). Then when you have all this done look at the info I will be providing on how to do a TT conversion and do that. Woolah you have an individual TT aero on a more installment plan style way and get to drive the car in the meantime. So far I am doing mine with cast off bits from this site and ebay specials and group buys from here.

I expect my bills to be running at close to 5 grand by the time I get my TT engine installed but bear in mind my car value before I started was circa £7k to be generous, when I have the TT conversion done with my other mods I am insuring it for £13k so it is worth going this route on a financial basis. It is a lot of hassle and a lot of work.

Whats the insurance like on a modified N/A? Sometimes they want more than a standard TT.

I know it doesn't make much sense, but then most insurance quotes don't seem to :(

Well the insurance hike for 40 % more power with a supercharger was only £138 on a £450 annual policy so with the modifications being standard toyota parts for a similar power hike I forsee a similar rise in insurance costs. That is based on tesco's actually re-insuring me this year. Seems they have a thing about insuring SZ supras at the mo going on the thread trend at the mo.

Personally, I never even considered a N/A. I knew that after owning a n/a for 5 mins I'd be kicking myself for not getting the TT. I'm sure that all N/A owners would tell you the same if they're being honest.

As for Aerotops, you can get TT ones but I believe that most are N/As. I guess Aerotops are OK if you like that sort of thing but they're a bit 80's looking and leave you open to all those "chestwig" type comments.

So . . .

Short answer : Buy a Hardtop TT

Longer answer : If you're unsure whether you want a N/A or a TT then you should take several of both for a long test drive - then buy a TT.

is there going to be a group buy on chest wigs? if so i'm in......

......BTW Jake can you tell me where i can get my Mkiv supra. net pipe and slippers now that i'm in the auto brigade:)

i was never a huge aero fan but this weekend has been fun with one.

Auto is fine, but all things being equal ie price availability etc then i'd have a manual.

I don't really use the TT's extra over the NA that often, but its nice to have it there for the odd blat or to make overtaking easier etc.......
