J Spec Brakes

Has anyone tried uprating the disks and pads instead of going for the UK set up? If anyone has what was the improvement and also was it worth doing?

At the moment im thinking about buying Brembo disks and pads front and back instead of going for th UK set up. Anyones opinions on this will be appreciated.

I have Uk Disks and calipers on my car with Endless CCX pads, Went to the nurburging last year and they never missed a beat 10/10 !!!

There not cheap you would be looking around the £600-800 for a good set.

I know when i first got my Supra they had j-spec brakes on and they were shocking? Maybe they were just worn and needing replacing? I just went for a new brake set up. Just replacing the j-spec ones will be alot cheaper though. They must still be good as they were on the car to start with so you might find it easier and cheaper just to replace? Are you stock or bpu?

Chris wilson does/did some nice pads for the smaller j-spec brakes, performance friction i think.

Well after having my BPU TT for the last month I can not commend the car enough. Awesome drive. The only thing is the JSpec brakes... truely shocking to say the least. This will be my first spend on upgrading I think. I too was wondering whether to upgrade the disks/pads or go for the UK set up

I would imagine on a stock Supra just changing for new would be fine? Anything more like bpu then i would want at least a UK set up. And if you want to go showy then go for the big brakes, But then you can be looking at serious money.

For road use the smaller "Jpsec" brakes are absolutely fine, even when used at very high speeds. You just need to ensure that the system is correctly setup without worn out parts.

Get a full system flush and replace with DOT4 race fluid, decent discs (Stock to Toyota OEM

If the system is setup well the small brake setup will stop you fine on a hard stop from over 170mph (done it) and will cut in the ABS (i.e lock the wheels) at over 60mph. If that isn't enough for public roads then you're driving too fast IMO.

If it's going to be used on the track it's a whole different matter...

I will check over the brakes, they had a system flush, motul fluid, Goodridge hoses and rear pads not long before I had it. I dont race about they just dont seem to have any bite to them even slowing from 60mph. I will look at an upgrade soon if any UK's come on the classifieds or save a month for something big:d

Hmmmm how much does chris wilson charge for the pads?as I would be interested in getting a full set all round as I dont want to replace my disc as they seem fine for normal road use

Scotty and foggy, you need to check your discs in detail (runout, thickness, scoring, etc), just a feeling of pedal is worthless.

Pads and disc material should also be matched all round. Also check that the sliders are not frozen up.

It's basic mechanics, but I hate to see people spending huge amounts of money on these big brake upgrades when a simple issue or component is upsetting the whole system.

Take it to a garage that knows these cars mate, a random one won't have a clue what to look for. Easy way to check is to see if they do anything more than look at the current brakes. If they only take a visual inspection and tell you what's wrong, walk away. I'm not trying to be a git, just trying to save you money and wasted time.

Much appreciated, that's the only problem I have at the moment, it's coming due a service and I dont know of any reputable supra garages around here that i would trust.

I think cw isnt to far away from me, id be willing to take a 60 mile drive for him to service and carry out the work on it but dont know what he would charge

A trip to Chris would be a very good choice. He's about as experienced and knowledgeable as you can get. For the fuel cost alone and to get some 1st class advice it'd be money well spent.

Get the spanners out and have a look, there is no better feeling than finding a soulution to a problem yourself for free, providing you feel comfortable doing so

I do the vast majority of work on all my cars myself and love it, but if there is something i dont quite feel up to doing ill let a garage do it.

I very nearly had to throw the towel in on the heater matrix and the reacent turbo replacements though .

But yea have a go i did and have never looked back.

I am new to Supras so having him check over the car and him being able to tell me of any potential probs, condition etc would be really good for me as I want to keep my car maintained as much as I can. I unfortunately dont have bottomless pockets so I will be keeping my fingers crossed that he gives the car the all clear or would be gutted lol

Haha, if I can learn the very basics of all fluid changes and general check for what to look for I would be fairly happy I think.

I have high ambitions for mechanical work as you can see lol

Foggy, bring it round mine and we can have a look together if your not too confident, i have all the tools needed for any kind of work -

Then when it all goes wrong we can put it back together with cable ties and duck tape
