Hello People

Lookin into changing my cambelt

Toyota have offered £170 and i get a car free of charge for a few days,is that good or not?

On my last car,Mr2 Turbo i read if the timing belt snapped it shouldnt do much damage,is this the same on the TT or should i get it done right away as i dont no when it was last done?

:baa:

Toyota's offer sounds good if it includes a car. If it snaps it will destroy your engine!

Err dont think it will, unless the internas are modified, the engine in non-interference. It'll just be a pain in the arse.

Not true!

If you are running standard cams on the 2JZ-GTE it will not damage anything - it is designed as a non intereference engine.

Not too sure about the N/A though, that maybe different.

Ben..

Buggar Tim, ya beat me too it!!

Apparently the NA is the same, which surprises me because of the higher compression ratio. Mind you my mate's MkII MR2 is also non-interference so maybe its the Toyota design philosophy. Bloody good idea if it is.

Anytime I ever buy a car regardless of what the service history says I do the cam belt on it. Its just not worth the aggro and uncertainty. With the cam belt done you know for certain that you have 60k's worth of driving on the belt which is more than I would ever need on a car and I used to do 700 miles a week. £175 isn't bad for a cambelt change from a dealer either. Vauxhall wanted the best part of £400 to do me omega V6 got it done back street specialist for £300 the cambelt kit itself complete with pulleys which are bits other than the belt that can go was over £150.

Im not going out spending £175 if it isnt going to hurt if it does snap one day,i will just get it replaced if and when it does, but im not going to run the risk if we're unsure?

Are you serious? Get the bloody thing done. Toyota didn't make it NI so you can wait for it to snap.

I suppose with the VVTi it all depends at what revs the cambelt goes though. Higher revs, changed timing and then snap!! Bye bye a few valves!

Ben..

Can't quite see what the timing has to do with it. Its all down to valve lift. Once the valve is stuck open at highest lift, the timing doesn't come into it, the piston either hits or misses it.

Waiting for the belt to break is just madness, especially for the sake of £170, although why they need it for a few days is a bit beyond me.

Don't think it's just Supra owners, cambelt replacement has always been one of the forgotten things when it comes to car maintenance, when I was on the breakdowns, I say 80% of all COWS (cut out wont start) were due to cambelt failure.

Although with these supercars becoming ever cheaper, people buy them without thinking of running costs.

£170 for a main dealer 2.8 hour job???? As his royal orangness himself David Dickinson would say "thats cheap as chips that is!!".

That said why pay out that sort of money when you can wait for it to snap on your way to a crucial business meeting in the pi**ing rain and as you were too skinflint to get a decent recovery service you have to wait for about 2 hours for any one to tow you away and then toyota or some other garage charge you a small fortune to take the head off to make sure that there was no damage done!! Makes much more sense that does:p
