Gear changes in cold weather

When the weather is cold and i first start driving my Supra, the gear changes seem to take a lot more getting into than when its warm. That is until the gearbox warms up, then it's ok.

Is this the same for anyone else? Is there a reason behind this?

my 2nd gear does this when its cold takes a little more effort warm its fine

I have noticed this more now days that my Supra is 11 years old, maybe a change of oil is due.........that will help a little.....

Change your gearbox oil (and diff oil) and you will be 100%

years ago when I used to buy a new car, come winter I alway noticed the drive train to feel a little stiff ish. A full gearbox oil and diff oil change later the cars were always as smooth from a below freezing cold start to when they were warm.

Unfortunately, gearbox and diff oils are always ignored even by dealers where its listed as part of a scheduled service as a result they never get done. Also gear oils are NOT life time items as many people like to claim.

Well, my diff oil was changed when i got my new Diff put in. Looks like it's just the gearbox oil to to.

Quite easy but you DO need a ramp.

Undo the drain plug towards the bottom of the gearbox.

When all old oil is drained, refit drain plug.

Undo filling plug nearer the top of the gearbox.

Fill until it just about starts to pour out.

Refit filling plug.

Shouldnt be, plug at the bottom to drain, and plug at the top to fill up I would imagine......

its very awkward to fill cause the limited space took a while to get the 1.8 liters in. you need a small container with funnel

or a hand pump

Changing the oils is a good idea if you've no history of when they were last done, but the ecu holds onto the gears slightly longer when the engine is cold to help it warm up quicker.

Not if it's a manual! I'm pretty sure Pete's is a 5 spd.

No idea which gearbox you're talking about but; This sounds like you have the wrong oil in the gearbox.

For instance;

The TT6 Getrag box is hard to shift when cold with the wrong oil in it.

Please see the FAQ on oils in the FAQ section and purchase the approved types only.

The Getrag box is VERY sensitive to the type of oil that's in it.

I agree but would advise that the bold bit is attempted first

Yeah, mines a 5 speed manual.

Second has always been a bit harder to get into anyway and tends to sometimes jerk into it a bit.

I'll book it into a garage to get the oils done anyway. It'l save me ballsing it up.
