Anyone here got any good stories about antivirus software? I have tested about 5 differnt ones recently and the best I have used so far is NOD32, Kaspersky was pretty good but caused conflicts with Office 2003.

I'd like to try SOPHOS but its really expensive, but supposed to be the best, anyone tried it?

Try this mate - I lifted from bits from http://www.computercops.biz/postitle27690-0-0-.html . Its pretty thorough :) :

- SpyBot Search and Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=mirrors - Make sure you update the definitions when its installed though!

- HijackThis - http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

- Run an online virus scan at Panda Active Scan

- Next, download the latest version of CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom, the creator of Hijack This. http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe

Run it, press 'Fix', and allow it to fix all it finds.

- Now download Ad-Aware at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

After installing AAW, and before running the program, you NEED to FIRST update the reference file following these instructions.

Now do the following:

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:

check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:

Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Press "Scan Now"

- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"

- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"

- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"

- Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...

It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Click 'Next' again

Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

If it finds "bad" files and registry keys, press "Next" again

It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. If it says theere are none selected, select them ALL by putting ticks into the boxes - Click OK.

Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.

That ought to get rid of most of your spyware.

When you've done all that, re-run Hijack This.

Let us know if there are any problems.

I always use Norton Anti-Virus 2003 now. I've tried loads of different anti-virus apps and never been very happy with any of the others. AVG let me down very badly once.

It's almost impossible to get a virus if you're running NAV2003. I've tried NAV2004 and it also seemed very good but a bit slow sometimes.

Drop me an email if any of you guys want to try NAV2003

NAV works well but Symantec aren't always that quick off the mark with new virus definition files. In particular if you rely on the standard "live update" sevice this is normally only updated weekly.

They were 24 hours late with Blaster...

I use McAffee ASAP....the firm i used to work for re-sells it.

I have had no probz with virus' since I installed it. I go to Hax, Crax and Warez sites regularly, which usually squirt a virus at your PC when you go to em...but when it has found a virus it has nuked it on the spot :)
