View Full Version : Does the standard head unit have RCA outs?

I'm upgradingh everything but the head unit, so I need to know if I can get an easy signal-level output from the head unit.

And is the existing head good enough quality on a UK MkIV to keep in an otherwise upgrade system?

LOL:) - He's right on both counts...

You can probably get the line level outputs from the amp end but i wouldn't have a clue as to what the wiring colours would be. I expect you'll have 4 signal cables and 1 common earth. (Guess)

Arse biscuits. Well, I suppose I'm stuck with that head unit anyway because I can't afford to upgrade it too.

Although, does anyone want to tempt me by telling me if there's a good quality flush-mounted (ie not removable facia) head unit that will control the exsiting CD changer? It doesn't have to have an amp in it because I'll be providing that separately.

I've chickened out of the installation myself as I just can't find out the wiring colours. I did beat Autosounds (Newcastle) down to a sensible price, although I've changed things around a fair bit because the Alpine amp was a) not powerful enough and b) not available till August. Also, they recommended that for this setup that I go for the S type sub as the R type would need even more to drive it properly and wouldn't be worth it on a mid range system such as I'm getting.

What d'you think of this, fitted for £ 685 inc vat:

1 x Blaupunkt Velocity 6 channel amp (VR 6000) 4 x 55w + 2 x 110w RMS or 4 x 55w + 380w RMS bridged, as I'll run it for the sub.

2 x Alpine 6939S 6x9's in the back

2 x Infinity Kappa 6" in the front (free, courtesy of my brother)

1 x 12" 4 ohm S type Alpine sub SWS-1241

1 x my own 18mm marine ply sub-box 1.1 cu ft.

Should be a good little system.:)

Good price too... If an ordinary customer came into my shop, I wouldn't do it that cheap!!! There's a lot of work there... I wonder if they realise how much work??? - Does that include all the cables and labour to install everything?

Yeah, it does include everything, but then as a family we seem to spend wads of dosh in there, so I managed to batter them down to 'trade prices' for the lot. Not true trade prices of course, but good ones. All I have to do is sort the sub box out in the next few days.

Maybe I should upgrade the head unit too? Can you get non-removable facia jobbies?

Very few and far between, the new top end Pioneer, Top end Alpine, JVC Chameleon (? spelling ?) and Sony blackout units are the only ones that spring to mind.

Even the Kenwood Mask units have detatchable facias now, although, this might suit you as you can't remove the facia once it has reversed.

So is that the way head units have gone then, almost all have removable facias? D'you still have to remove them from the car, or are you saying that some have reversible ones that lock into place or something?I'm a bit behind on all this I have to admit. The last head unit I bought was god knows how many years ago.
