Having read through a lot of posts on the subject the general thinking is that for the automatic gearbox you should use the Toyota ATF T-IV fluid, If I was having trouble getting some and needed to fit my gearbox asap is there an alternative available at a local motor factors or Halfords etc?

It wouldn’t be for a full flush just filling the torque convertor and a topup

Are there any options out there?

Toyota Type-IV ATF is still available from main dealer. I bought some no more than 2 months ago from them, but it wasn't cheap(£45ish). I think the part number was:08886-82025. Comes in a 5l grey plastic can. Luckily I'm quite friendly with my local Toyota parts guy so he took the time to search for it instead of fobbing me off with Type-II. For some bizarre reason it's listed on their EPC as Power Steering Fluid, but the can most definitely says Type-IV ATF fluid on the front of it.
