vvti tappet noise

On a related note, the shim clearance check & adjustment is actually part of the service schedule, but I've never heard of any garage (even the specialists on here) actually doing it!

Indeed it is, 60K and 120K. As for never hearing about specialists doing it :taped:

I had a long chat with a Toyota garage about this one day many years ago. He said that the check is usually just whether or not you can hear tappet rattle or not. If not then they don't investigate any further. One time I did actually ask them to do the check and they wrote down the clearances for me. Of course I'll never actually know if they did the check at all or not ;)

Hi JB,

don't want to alarm you but,

when my 1st engine did it's no.5 main bearing, it started off sounding like a faint tapping.....everyone, e.g Leon & a few others thought tappets at first....& you know what happened soon after that.

I've heard of a couple of VVti's doing no.5 in, mine not included.

It's not TOO bad a job to check the clearances, but it's very rare to find them with opened up ones that make a noise, they tend to close up and kill performance, with no noise issues. Injector or VVTi actuator noise is more likely, or little end or piston noise. You can tell a lot with a decent mechanics stethoscope. Good luck!

I remember full well what happened with your engine which is why it worried me so much when I first heard it.

Its a bone stock engine but with 115,000 miles on it. Properly cared for during its life so not expecting problems, but you never know.

I need to find a trusty local mechanic that knows the VVTI then and get them checked out.

Ive got a strange tappet sound on mine when revved to 2.5k cold, it dissapears when the engines warm, been like it for over 12 months now with plenty of abuse(mines not vvti btw),also i found quite abit on google discribing it as valve clatter which aparently is common on toyota`s which use shims to adjust the valve clearance.

my noise is there all the time, not just on start up and even when revved just a bit.

Im expecting the worst.

Ur lucky, my newly rebuilt VVT developed a noise after only 400miles! I 'THink' its coz the cams were slightly scored when it blew up before.. So engine out and head off for refurb..

Ill probably find my race bearings will fuck up and ill do the bottom end before ive even ran it in!!

My glass is half empty but yours sounds like it may be half full.. Dont write it off just yet.. :)

Don't work yourself into a dizzy just yet. Get someone to have a look at it. It very well could be Shim/VVTI related still. I've heard some VVTI solenoids make some monsterous noises:)

The VVTI solenoids wouldnt make a noise on tickover for example though would it.. I mean the VVTI isnt working then..

Yup. The very nature by which they work means that regulated oil pressure needs to be maintained in the intake cam pulley to lock the cam in position, even at idle. Any fault in the system can make that pulley rattle like an arthritic horse. Scored 1st cap, dirt in the system, worn cam pulley mech, etc ect will all make a noise.

BMW Vanos's suffer the same problem when they are on the way out.

Always worth checking the easy stuff before tearing into a re-build.:)

  • 8 months later...

yes, I stopped hearing it as I had the windows shut while driving.

I'm sure it is still there but as I'm doing around 1000 miles a year I dont really get it out until the summer so will see then.

The car is due to go for a full decat sometime soon and will get the oil changed to a thicker one and see if that helps silence it. Could be it was just me being paranoid, but knowing how Foodfreaks car went it will be in the back of my mind.
