What ECU do i need

The Stock ECU contains multiple maps, if you disconnect the battery for a few mins and reconnect, the ECU is reset and it will learn what is the best map to use

 

Marty in Supra Specialists Ireland will confirm, no need to remap Supra's for Ireland

 

I have ran a few tanks of the E5 99Ron and found the Texaco Techron better

Its not a case of multiple maps, its not a self learning ECU as such, just a number of default sub map adjustments should certain parameters be met. like knock being detected if low octane fuel being used, the same goes should the lambda or MAO go faulty etc.

I taught thats what a car mapper does, is adjust certain key parameters to best suit the conditions and resources the engine has available

Marty from SSI (Supra Specialest Ireland) did mention this before for a cork car running on what u guys have down there :p

 

He is a member on here

 

Stock ECU has some very clever Knock detection and timing retard maps built in, which means you'll be fine on stock boost levels

Some info from Supra Specialists Ireland on E85

 

Its actually rated at 98.2 Ron i believe. And i'm also going to give a little tip to anyone going to switch to it Full time.

 

E5 is a blended Fuel which is 95% petrol and 5% eth. If uou know how combustion works on a petrol engine you will know that the Stioch value of Petrol is 14.7:1, and so your ECU o2 feedback is programmed for this. Adding Eth will throw this of sligtly as Eth has a lower Stioch value.

 

After filling the tank, remove power to the ECU for a few minutes (remove earth lead) and this will clear the Stored o2 feedback values to the ECU). After restarting the car, the ECU will have to relearn its o2 feed back strategy, which may take around 30 miles of driving, but it will be a strategy to work with the new fuel.

 

Will disconecting the Battery alone reset the ECU??

Which is exactly what i said, any STD ECU especially turbo cars is capable of this, nothing special, it doesn't have a multitude of maps for all occasions built in, just the defaults that Toyota mappers expect on a normal road car.

I can't see how the above procedure will make any difference as a std O2 sensor can only respond to the combustion process so no matter what additives you add, as soon as you revert to normal petrol it will just run stoic,it just a switch that the ECU responds to, and in any case this has absolutely no effect during positive boost or over 4,000 RPM

E85 is sold from the pump over here as Unleaded Petrol by Maxol @99RON everything else is 95 RON

I cant comment on it but all I know he is a respected tuner in the Supra Community UK and Ireland

Ricky My post is taken slightly out of contex there ;)

 

E85 i dont think is available on the mainland, or here in N.Ireland, but is availble throughout the R.O.I

My Post was made when Irish stations introduced the fuel on the forcourts, unfortunately with not alot of info on it.

 

Although its Ron rating is that of Super unleaded it is not a straight super unleaded fuel, its an unleaded/Ethonal blended fuel, so its burn process is slightly different.

 

My reason for saying to Remove the EFI power is to clear any long term fuel Trims, those trims are data adjustments which are added to ecu fuel maps - based on Short term fuel trim data (dictated by O2 feedback).

As we know the ECU will go into relearn mode and carry out its basic relearn procedures such as Idle strategy, another will be clearing any stored fuel trims and starting again..i.e something you must do after replacing an o2 sensor, as the LTFT data is based the old sensors info to the ecu

 

Now using different types of Unleaded fuel i.e super or ordinary unleaded wouldnt require this, but as E85 is neither i thought it would be a good idea to let the ECU re-adjust the above as a precautionary measure :)

Just to clarify folks:

 

E85 is only for use in flexi-fuel cars or engines that have been mapped to run on it.

 

E5 fuel is the high grade (99 ron) fuel available for use in all unleaded cars.

 

Yes, sorry, i was reffering to E5 in my post above (5% eth. Blended Fuel) which is ROI equiv fuel to the UK's super unleaded fuels.

 

E85 is an 85% eth. blend (108 ron) and although intended for flex equipped cars it can be used in any car with the correct fuel system mods and mapping i.e. the combustion needs around 30% more E85 than it would unleaded petrol, but due to its RON rating, it may become a better alternative to race fuels if the prices and availability get better :D
