new project: Compound Boost vvti ma60

Hi Guys,

I'm currently building a new car for dragracing / fun racing here in the Netherlands. I chose to go with the MA60 body, as it's a 6 banger on the license (it's not easily allowed to change the number of pistons in holland). I'm building a 2jz-gte vvti engine in there to be controlled with the AEM ECU. To spool up the big turbo (haven't choosen that one yet) I use the supercharger of a Mercedes SLK 230 (Eaton series).

Here is a picture of the setup

here is my write up on my site about the project

Sweet! :D

So you've binned the ACu, swapped the alternator to the ACU mounts, and put the SC where the alternator used to be?

Is that just to keep the intake system simple? What are the drive loads for the SC like compared to the alternator?

Good luck with the project!

*EDIT* I've stoppe being lazy and actually read some of your site now. :)

Was particulalry gratified to read this on there:

"Relocating the alternator was pretty straightforward. It had to be lined up with the water pump pulley, power steering pulley and the main pulley. Note the aluminum pulley on the crank will be removed. These pulleys are bearing / crank killers because they do not damp the vibrations in the crank from the combustion strokes. The alternator doesn't have much of the V belt running over it, so it might slip with high acceleration, anyways, we don't care. We'll be installing a bigger pulley on the alternator soon, solving the problem slightly."

Could you install an idler wheel somethwhere to get back to nearly 180 degrees of wrap around the alternator pulley as well?

Yes we relocated the alternator to where the aircon compressor used to sit. There is NO way you can put the supercharger on the intake side and keep the piping simple. Relocating the alternator is easy.

I think the belt will only slip on the alternator on heavy acceleration, but then again, how often do you accelerate 'heavily'? If you do a run you'll be idling for a few minutes after that anyways. So I think we'll forget that idling pulley and give it a try first.

I never kept you guys up to date on this..

Here are some pictures of the supercharger with belt, the new V belt for the alternator (see how it would slip over the pulley), the norbie mounts and the R154 mk3 tranny with 1jz bellhouse.

The gearing on the supercharger is about 2:1. So the charger will push 2 liter of air every engine revelation until the turbo spools. That means we'll be having around 2/1.5 = 0.33 bar of boost from idle. Should be sufficient.

What a great project!

Just out of interest, has anyone ever fitted a VNT turbo to a Supra? One of the guys on the Renault turbo owners club has just done this and can get 10psi just by reving the engine at standstill!! Hits 1 bar at about 1500rpm and is making full boost by about 2400rpm.

:)

Variable Geometry Turbos are becoming more common but the big size turbos (700 HP somethiing) are still not available for a fair price.

Nice thing on the turbos is you don't need a wastegate, as you can control both spool and boost with the blades of the exhaust turbine wheel.

Today I dropped the engine in my car:

Here is an old update:

Ok here is a slight update on the project. As stated before we will change the complete rear of the car using a RA60/TA60 floorplan which is solid axle. The small solid axle will be replaced with one of a hilux / hiace (5 bolt / G differential). Here is the car with the donor floorplan:

The next picture shows the solid rear axle on the donor floorplan:

Here we are removing the rear from the car

Voila, the wheels on the floor

And the independant rear suspension is gone.

Let's see when the solid axle goes in!

We've also been working on getting the TH-350 to fit the 2jz. Originally our plan was a R154, but more research resulted in the 3-speed automatic decision. We made an adapter plate on the oil pump, seen in someones post on supramania (we made the plate ourselves cause his was not available for sale)":

and here is a new update of this weekend:

here are some more pictures on the solid axle conversion. We use the hilux axle and the celica RA/TA60 floorplan.
