DSK Posted June 6, 2009 Share Posted June 6, 2009 I used to have a MK3 3.0i Turbo auto. Great car, huge spec as you're aware, very reliable, covered 63,000miles in mine and wanted nothing but main services, brakes, tyres. These tended to have a reputation for head gaskets as the gaskets were made from asbestos and I used to recall seeing many Supra's suffering from this when I was looking for mine. Now a days to find a clean car will be harder as I'd say FSH with proof of whats been done is a must, its still a specialist car and needs its regular TLC. I'm not overly convinced in general by the examples that come up on autotrader with patchy history, rust, worn interiors etc. The MK3 Turbo is the one ot go for, still modern enough and a great drive and can also be tuned easily with parts easily available from the likes of Fennsport Toyota Performance parts should you be that way inclined. Test drive the cars for about 30 minutes or so, let the engine idle for a while after a run too, the engines should sound healthy and free from rattles/ticking. Check the condition of the engine coolant, it must have proper Toyota red coolant in there, not water! Don't pay over £1500 for a superb example and many come up advertised at around £700+, just got to take your time and allow the right one to come along...... Oh by now, I'd want to see that the shock absorbers and springs changed due to age/miles, if not budget to have this done to ensure you enjoy a composed fresh feeling chassis. garethr Posted June 7, 2009 Share Posted June 7, 2009 Most Mk3s and nearly all Mk2s are rusty. Most Mk3 3-litre turbos have either head gasket or bottom end problems, or both. If you want a Mk3 buy a JZA70. They are all imports, so they won't be as rusty and the 1JZ-GTE is unlikely to give trouble. I like a good chrome engine bay and just finished chroming and polishing the soarer. DSK Posted June 11, 2009 Share Posted June 11, 2009 Well I have an 1995 M5 when it was 1 year old, many other M BMW cars and really wanted a Supra TT over a 2001 BMW M5, Jaguar XJR 4.2 etc. The Supra is an astonishing car by modern standards, all I would say is, buy the best example you can ensuring it has a correct history file.
