Wastegates :S

Hay guys coz im new to all this turbo talk iv seen uprated "wastegates" just asking what wastegates do and the advantages on up rated ones like these? Is the wastegate on the turbo it self?

Wastegates are integrated to the turbo housing on the stock TT's, the aftermarket ones cannot be used on the stock system.

What turbo system do you have installed on the car?

In that case don't bother looking at wastegates, they are not required, nor possible to fit to the stock system. They are only needed on highly modified single/big twin turbo cars.

Instead, take a read here (click the blue text): BPU

Basically the wastegate regulates boost pressure. Without one a turbo would spool until something breaks. The wastegate opens at a certain (set) pressure, stopping the turbocharger creating more boost than is required.

You can get either internally or externally wastegated turbochargers. The stock TT system is internal (i.e. the wastegate is intergrated into the turbos). External kits are usually used for better boost control or higher boost applications, hence them being included in most aftermarket single turbo kits.

As Homer says, unless you've got a single turbo or huge twins it's not something you can change for a benefit.

It might be an idea to buy a book such as Street turbocharging to get a basic idea of how things work in cars such as the Supra.
