help with wheel spacers please

hay guys well iv just bought some wheels (ultralite gt-IIs) off gaz and he says i need around 8mm spacers too fit over the uk spec brakes!! now i was wondering if anyone could recommend were to buy them from online please??

 

with 8mm spacers on will the studs be long enough and safe enough when tightened?? cheers

If you buy from a reputable company anything over 5mm should come with longer studs to fit fella and if they dont dont buy them.

If you are going to fit spacers make sure they are the bolt on type, just using a simple spacer with longer studs is potentially very dangerous (see links below).

You won't get those ones for 8mm though Nic.

 

The rule of thumb is you need the threads to be as deep as the thread is wide. The supra has 12mm studs so it needs to be 12mm deep in order to be considered safe.

 

With regards to 8mm spacers, i doubt you will get hubcentric ones, although you might. It all depends how deep the spigot is on the hub. I haven't checked this yet but i have made 10mm spacers that are hubcentric with the spigot bore being 8mm, this leaves 2mm for the outer spigot.

 

As its an extra 10mm i will definitely be getting longer studs for them though.

Sorry to disagree with Nic as he is very knowledgable in most things, but i wouldnt trust anything other than a hubcentric spacer on my cars.

Without the centre ring the wheel is using just the bolts to centre itself and also all the weight of the car and the pressure from driving is on those bolts.

Even if it is a bolt on spacer that makes no difference it actually makes it worse as the weight form the car and so on is now being forced on bolts that are housed in an aluminium spacer and that in my eyes spells disaster.

I will try link up where i bought mine from but im not too good at this.

The weight doesn't go onto the spigot at all, all the weight is on the 60 degree nuts which then puts the sheer stress onto the studs. The friction between the face of the hub and the face of the wheel takes a fair brunt of the force.

 

If the spigot was taking the weight of the car it would make mincemeat of the alloy wheel spigot hole.

 

I've gone for 25mm bolt on hubcentric adapters and 10mm staright through hole hubcentric spacers. I'll be using longer studs for the front and the rears will be using tensile steel bolts, bolting in front he rear of the spacer and loctited.

cheers to you guys!! only thing is on that link is the hubcenteric starts at 20 or 25mm i will only need the max off 8 mm mayb only on the front but not sure yet!!

 

Can you get hubcenteric that are 8mm??

 

Is anyone running ultralite gt_IIs with uk brakes?

Just realised the (randon google) pic I posted didn't have the centre spigot, you're correct this is important for centering and supporting the wheel.

 

I think minimum width is 10mm for the hubcentric spacers, this will give you 2mm more clearance which shouldn't make a huge difference.

 

Personally though I wouldn't fit wheels with spacers and only fit wheels with the correct offset to clear the calipers.
