Hi everyone,

I'm new here, currently got an MG ZR 160, gonna be 3 years old soon (the car!! ;) ), so I'm looking for something quicker.

I want a jap turbo, what's the Supra like?

Seen a few around for like 13k - 15k, reasonable mileage etc, and my insurance quote wasn't too bad!

I'm worried about looking after it though, should I make sure it's got a full Toyota dealer service history for example? Do the turbo's need replacing? What mileage? Never had a turbo before and I'm not very car literate - used to taking it to the garage to be fixed so won't be doing home repairs much. :conf:

Anything else I should look out for?

Welcome to the forum. Where in Hampshire are you? I'm in Fareham, between Portsmouth and Southampton.

There's some debate about weather Toyota dealerships are actually better then specialist Supra garages. I personally stay clear of the dealerships and get my car work done at either ToyodaTech, which is in Hampshire, or at Leons up in Milton Keynes. A service history is still important, especially as the oil needs changing every 3000-4000 miles. I don't think there's a known life limit on the turbo's, mine having been running at 1.2 bar boost for probably most of it's life, and I'm nearly the 90k miles mark now with no signs of problems. (talk about asking for trouble!) :)

If you do a search (button at the top of the screen) you'll find lots of information for first time buyers. Also try using the Resources and Imports menu items at the top of the screen, they should lead you to some useful info too.

If you want a J-spec, you might find you won't be able to get full Toyota history. You normal only get the service history that's been done in this country.

An example from the Toyota garage I had my Supras serviced from........"I'd like a quote for a clutch on a Supra MKIV Twin Turbo?" ........."Sure, is that the 1.4 litre or 1.8 litre?" :conf:

Don't go there anymore.

Keep the fluids/oil changed regular and it will go forever. My MKIII turbo is still going strong at 200k + miles.

Main cost is tyres, brake pads and oil changes, all of which are easy to do yourself.

I've been running 1.2 bar for 2 years, with no problems. Totally over engineered car. The only problems you ever here of are blown turbos that have been running excessive boost.

Thanks guys,

I'm on sunny Hayling Island, so a Hants Supra garage would be cool, I'll look into those when (if) I get one.

Currently just looking for info, don't really know what's best.

How about imports then? Is the insurance really that much more?

What are the different specs etc.?

Sorry for all the questions I'm a quick learner honest.

I'm in love with these beasts, I'll probably be sacked from moderating the ZR forum, but never mind! :D

A lot of j_specs dont come with service history but if you look in the righ t places they do,I got my J_spec with full Jap service history documented in detail, aswell as the auction grade sheet and lots of other paperwork, othe members have full serivce history too.

13-15k should buy you a very nice example indeed - Are you after a manual or Auto ? You can pick you really nice manual 6 speeders for as little as 12k nowadays and below.13-15k may buy you a facelift or a supra with a bit of bling on there.

What's best, the auto or the manual?

The manual is a 6 spd isn't it? At least all the imports I've seen are.

Hey 400BHP, that car's real nice, bit high mileage though, I was lookin for a bit less hence I'm swaying towards an import.

100k on a 3litre block is considered low milage dude, this aint a 1.6 engine which has been run to the ground@100k modern engines +big blocks = last forever if looked after properly.

I think it was Termy who was saying there is a stock supra which has done 350k + miles on stock internals and is still going strong.

It's rubbish, I wouldn't get one if I were you. Nobody here would touch one with a barge pole :p

I recently got my low-mileage '96 facelift model for quite a bit less than that, so I guess you can get a canine's danglies of a Supra for that sort of money.

If it's a fresh import, check the auction grade - do a search on this site to find more info. Make sure all the required conversions have been done (e.g. kmh->mph) and that it has its SVA certificate. If you are not too confident with cars, get it checked out by the AA or the RAC, or one of the engineery-type people off this board might be able to help for a consideration?

Change the oil regularly. Find a local mechanic on these boards who can do its routine servicing. That's about it, really.

Being a Toyota, it's highly unlikely to go wrong. But, being a twin-turbo, it's highly likely to cost a fortune if it does! Decisions, decisions...
