Matt has supplied me with a Kenwood active subwoofer type thing for the boot - looks good, sounds great, and takes up virtually no space.

It even has a little wired remote control (sitting in the middle of the console) to control it !!

How cool is that :)

Thanks Matt - i can now listen to my sounds properly - regardless or whether its Linkin Park, Santana or Hear'Say - they all sound great....

Its probably a stupid question, but why mount it lengthways when you could have put it widthways and taken less boot space?

Not a stupid question at all :)

As the car is a real weekender only now - space isn't a premium to me as it is to others.

I mounted it that way, as i didn't want to be able to see the leads feeding it, and it looked better...

Glad you like it:thumbs:

That picture makes it look huge!

That looks nice, whats the sound like on those things? compared to say a 12 inch sub in a sealed box?

You'd have to ask Matt that - i'm V.Happy with the sound !!

More than adequate for me !!

I have both, a Panasonic Self-amp'd and a 12" in-a-box...
(had BOTH in my RS - 12" in hatch, self-amp'd under dash behind
centre console - fitted a treat - FRONT BASS ! ! )

the self-amp'd is SO easy to plug in (between head unit and plugs -
THAT'S IT ! ) and gives a pretty good "semi-sub" sort of fill

BUT...

it's NOTHING like the 12" (and THAT'S only a pretty cheap Kenwood ! )

The 12" is MUCH louder and a fair bit lower frequency too.
You just can't expect too much of a small speaker.

I just chucked the self-amp'd into the Soop cos' I couldn't be arsed
to f**k about with the 12" box - that's gonna need some fairly
hefty surgery to make it fit in the Soop ! ?

But, I WILL be putting it in - not for the volume - but for the luvurly
LOW DOWN bass.

[ PLUS the self-amp'd actually cost more than the 12"/amp/box
combo ! ! ! ]

If you've got an Aerotop/need ALL the space you've got, then
DEFINITELY the self-amp'd are PERFECT.

Matt,

am I talking ******ks or would you agree ?

I sort of agree... A good 10" or 12" sub will be able to give more output and drop to lower frequencies but let's not miss the point.
The whole idea of one of these self amped units is that they are compact, easy to install and generally conceived to be a "tune-up" speaker. - They weren't designed to replace big subs, just to add a bit audio enjoyment for those that don't want the agro and space loss of a sub/sub box and amp.
These "tune-up"/compact woofers are generally around the £150-£250. A sub/box/amp/wiring kit can start at this sort of money and easily go way over to the silly side of £1000 just for a sub! and the same again for an amp:eek:

I had one of these Kenwood units in my wifes car for a while and it performed well. She had a Ka at the time so boot space was a premium, but running a standard system and the Kenwood unit made even Fords standard rubbish sound good.

Putting a sub in the car is generally the single biggest improvement you can make. What you want to put in depends on price, personal preferences, music tastes, boot space and even weight in some cases.

Horses for courses... Or as Big Brother would say... "You decide"

Thanks for the info, its interesting becase all the cars Ive been in with the sub sub boxes etc just get too loud, the bass is overwhelming but good. Tbh I dont want to be a townie type with the bass booming from my car like every nova/escort driver I see. So I was wondering if this would be a good mid range type of speaker system that would still give a decent output if needed. I appreciate the space saving idea of it too.
