My brand new engine head just arrived!

I just received my brand new shortblock and head from the US. However, I noticed that the head has metal pieces that look like they should have been machined out. Here are some pictures, what should I do?

Sure does look like they are ment to be smooth.

Definately doesnt look right but does it matter? I don't know.

Thats just 'flash' from the casting process. - Its very thin material from where 2 halves of the mould havent quite been together.

 

Should be easy enough to grind off with a Dremel.

 

Just make sure you give it a damn good blow out with an airline afterward (or something to that effect)

 

Anyone else with some more opinions? Mr Wilson???

If it's so thin that you can pick it off with your finger then I would look at removing it, however looking at the pic, it looks reasonably thick, in which case I would leave it be. It's not in an area with anything moving, so having it there isn't going to cause any major headaches.

I doubt if you took it back to Toyota and asked to replace it because of the flash, that they would actually take it back.

isnt gunna do any damage but it isnt supposed to be there, like jk136 said just left over from the casting. i would grind it off flush carefully and remove any crap if it were me

Looks like you could just remove it with a small file Adi, just give it a blow off, or even run it through a degreesing bath to make sure.

Thanks guys, there also seems to be some burr in the combustion chamber area. Should I carefully use a grinder in this area too???

You would have to be very carfull. If you went a bit to far on those areas the gasket might not seal so well.

I'd clean any burrs and other bits off before fitting mate, if you caught any of that flashing with a socket while fitting/torquing the head and it dislodged it could find its way into an oilway and ruin your day for starters. Is a dremel a die-grinder? If so then thats what you should use, very carefully, with the tidiest stone you can find

use a de burer..(and blow off)

when i used to work at IRD making rolls royce and pratt and whitney engines,,..(this was always done by us)

As its a new head and block you'll need to run them through a cleaning bath/scrubber and blow all holes/oil ways through anyway, as often they are delivered with casting sand, inclusions, crap in the galleries etc. You don't want a tiny spec of sand ruining your engine

 

Take it to a reputable engine shop and have them de-burr all surfaces, bottom out all tapped holes with a chaser thread and clean the block & head in a hot tank then blow it through and shrink wrap it or whatever.

Complain bitterly to Mr Toyota, because that's exactly how they come from the factory. I'd leave it alone, there's sod all to gain from de burring it, and you may get swarf in oilways. I take it the head has been assembled at some time?
