Im not very mechanical, Just the first thing I have seen and wondered if it was that. Its going for it mot in march so will get it sorted then.

Just hoped it was something simple I could try and do.

Would the cam cover being broken cause any other problems?

As has been mentioned, that screw only holds the spark plug cover in place, there's no oil flow behind that cover, just the cam gears.

Is there any sign of oil leaking from the front main seal down by the crank pulley? Is there any sign of oil being sprayed on the other side of the engine?

Could also be a leak from the cam cover near the distributor but the patern of the leak doesn't make this too likely.

There isn't any around the front, But the right hand side towards the back of the engine is covered in oil and also a red fluid. the left hand side is only around the alternator and dissy cap area:

After seeing those pics cam cover gaskets looks highly likely. The spark cover is easy to take off, and should reveal if the gaskets are seeping. hey are a little more tricky to chnage on the NA due to the inlet manifold, but it's a cheap job to replace.

As you've mentioned red fluid there may ALSO be a leak from one of the pressured PAS hoses, there are two right down by the alternator where they join the rack. Try and clean off the gunk from those where they have the union bolts that connects to the rack, take it for a drive and see if anything fresh appears.

Steve would likely be cheapest, but they're only a few quid anyway (at least on the TT, guess the NA should be the same..). Might as well just get them from your local Toyota.

However, you also need to replace the washers and I think the bolts too that hold the cam cover down, at least the washers are not reusable. Careful when tightening them down, they only have a very light torque level, not too much more than hand tight. Over tighening has cracked a few covers before now!
