Fitting oil temp probe to the side of the block?

You could fit a flange to the oil filter takeoff that lets you fit temp and pressure sensors, I've got one and my oil temp sensor lives in there. It's a more 'live' reading of the oil temps than the stuff swilling around the bottom of the sump

Ah ok that would be an issue :) But if you're using those aeroquip fittings, you could bag a sensor takeoff component I would have thought? See attached pdf for an example.

The trouble with using temp sensors in sandwich plates or the cooler feed lines, is that you will only get a local temp, IE the oil passes through the block on its way to the take off plate, so you get an exaggerated reading of that area, which has been preheated by the cylinders/combustion etc, the sump will give a genuine average.

but if you want to measure the effectiveness of your oil cooler then you really need a sensor in the feed and return lines;)
