Urgent MOT help required...

My Supra is in for its MOT (VVTi Tiptronic) and it has failed because the fog light is not a high intensity red light... It's never failed before... is this a normal problem? Helpfully they only just told me even though it was MOT'd at 7.30am this morning so I haven't got time to run through other posts as the garage shuts soon. Any help/advice much much appreciated, Nick

is this a normal problem?

It's not.

Brighter bulb?

Are you aware that the J spec car didn't come with a standard fog light?

A fog light woud've been fitted in this country when it was imported, either an aditional light fitted on the back or it can be incorporated into the standard rear lights like this:

Thanks Merckx... OK having made it to the MOT centre where the most unhelpful mechanics in the world work (Phoneix is sorely missed) I had a look at my foglight and I have all the necessary bits and pieces ie dash switch with light, converted driver's side reverse light; but they were not satisfied that my replacement light was RED enough and said it was too amber for them to pass it as a red light.

Then they told me they also hadn't got it on the ramp to do the oil change because it was too low to go on. Again, helpful to tell me at 5.15pm when it was booked in for 7.45am.

If anyone can help with which red bulb I should get it and where to get it, then it would be much appreciated! I have ten days for my retest... although they didn't give me an emissions report or anything so who knows how far they even got despite charging me £53...

Mate I'm gutted for you. Is your car lowererd? If not, I don't see how it can be too low to go on a ramp. Sounds a bit odd to me. Like maybe these guys just can't be bothered? Who knows...

As for bulbs, at a guess I'd say either a trip to Halfords or a quick Google session are your best bets.

A couple of years ago i had this problem with the "redness"

I could not find anywhere with a red bulb so i bought a standard clear bulb and painted it with "carstyling glow" lacquer paint (Halfords)

A couple of coats and it is RED !

My fog lamp is where the off side reverse lamp would be

Yeah my car kinda failed last year for lack of redness on my home painted bulb - they said it was pink. But he passed it, gave me a red bulb and told me to fit it when i got home. It's still in the glove box :innocent:, but i don't think it would have fit anyway.

My MOT is due next month so I need to sort it out before then.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was need.

It was too dark to look at when I got back last night but I think the existing bulb must have been painted when it was originally converted and that this has somehow faded/flaked off causing it not to be red enough.

Thanks again for the help and I'll let you know how it goes...

Unfortunately, VOSA say that MOT Stations should charge £53.10. Although I get mine for £25, and I can test my own car! :D

Google RS Trade Counter in Crawley, they may be able to help and also post one out to you.

Also, if they could get it on a lift to c/o an MOT, why could they not drop the oil on the MOT lift?? Sounds like a bunch of f#@ktards! :D

You need to use at least a couple if not three coats to ensure is is red and not pink. As I recall it dries very quickly

Thanks for all the help. FYI I went to Halfords and they didn't have any of the carstyling flow paint - the guy didn't know what I was talking about.

Then I thought about the spray people used to use on the rear lights to tint them... they no longer sell that.

So I bought some tail light repair tape (transluscent). Applied to the bulb and that was amber too! ARGH!

Last resort was to dig the red brake caliper paint out of the back of the garage. Applied one film with a piece of cloth so as not to spread it too thick and hey presto, an MOT pass! I think the best bet is probably the clear lacquer model paint above.
