hoff
Could anyone confirm that the pully above the crank pully is the crank pully tensioner? Its the little one above the crank pully in the pick (ignor the arrow). Mine has developed a rattle on start up. Could be a bearing, though when the car has warmed up the rattle stops. Does anyone have an idea what it could be. Also what is the likely outcome if it fails? I assume a knackered engine.
Rich
Thats the crank pulley mate.I would get it looked at and changed if its on its way out ASAP. If it flys off there could be some serious damage!
jevansio
Yes that's the tensioner for the auxiallary belt
hoff
The crank pully is the large one with the arrow pointing to it I thought. Im talking about the little pully just above and to the side.

Rich
Or damage the crank keyway which could be a new crank/engine if it wrecks it.
Rich
Ah right ,ignore me then.
hoff
Yes that's the tensioner for the auxiallary belt Thought so, thanks Jay. Is it a major problem?
jevansio
I doubt a noisy bearing could cause any major damage in that scenario. The worst possible case is the auxillary belt comes off, but I can't see how a noisy bearing could cause that, I could understand if the tensioner itself wasn't working (ie not keeping the belt to it's correct tension). In the worst possible case if the belt came off, you would loose power steering, air con & water pump & alternator charge, so the biggie there is water temps shooting up. hoff
Thanks again Jay:) The pully itself seams to be working fine and there is no movement in it or the belt:)
Scooter
Have you taken the belt off at all? you could then feel for play all the pulleys and also start the car up without it to confirm the rattle is in some way linked to the aux belt. hoff
It will be due a service soon so 'll check it then. Good point that. I have a spare pully too so will see how it is and change it over then if need be.
