Hi mate

I would be very surprised if your head gasket has gone, the valve seals tend to cause a puff of smoke on start up, turbo seals show up as smoke when warm especially on run down

I would forget about local and think experienced and well respected, I would have a chat to Paul Whiffin at Whifbitz or ToyotaGT if I was you, do it once and do it right :), you might be surprised that things are not so bad ;)

I would get a head gasket check by a good garage, whifbitz are on here in the trader section, ToyotaGT is here http://www.toyotagt.co.uk/

If you are getting the valve seals done you will be needing the head off anyway so the gasket will be changed, you are best to address the turbo seals at the same time IF they need doing, but the smoke issue could be linked to the valve seals

I would say you are as likley to have a water leak or faulty rad cap rather than a head gasket fault, the steam is normal this time of year IMO
