Seatbelts - Leave for Pro's or not?

Hi all, I'm going to soon replace the passenger side seatbelt, whether I do it myself or not is something I'm thinking about.

I'm pretty confident doing general work, no troubles there, but being as seatbelts are so safety related - does anyone know whether or not these really should be left to a proper mechanic? I'm not sure if the belts have anything that is impertive to them working that an amateur like me would miss. It might just be the case all of those elements of the belt are done during manufacturing and mechanics know no more than I do (screw them in correctly!), in which case I may as well replace them.

Have any other people replaced them? If so are you sure they are working, did you get them checked out by someone else before having someone sit in that seat?

Just wanted to gather opinions :)

cheers

just nuts and bolts. easy job. just make sure not to damage the thread as sometimes they are really tight and need a bit of "forced encouragement" if the bolts are tight when you replace them then they should be fine. ive never had mine checked afterwards but they checked them inn an MOT and passed fine :)

Well, the MOT should pick up any issues I imagine, thats its purpose after all...I beleive they do tests to make sure the belt 'catches' correctly under load...

From http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_10016070:

Seatbelts - all seatbelts installed are checked for type, condition, operation and security. All compulsory seatbelts must be in place

I reckon I'll fit them then, just today I was removing rear seats and trim to fit new boot struts and I though...bleedin heck, this takes enough time (though it would be quicker) so I thought I'd do the belt at the same time.

I hate interior trim removal/refitting!
