Getrag

Hiya, just wanting the up to date info on which gear oil to use if V160 is not around. I dont want to mess up my gearbox and would appreciate real life feedback, thank you.

Also, if anyone wants to sell me V160 I will buy.

I have read the technical FAQ:

Manual 6-speed V160/161 Gearbox

Stock = Toyota V160 oil (PART No. 08885-01306)

Capacity 1.8l's when dry

Toyota V160 Oil (comes in 1L cans - require 2 cans)

Esso Dextron D21065

I recommened you stick with stock

Interval = 2 Years / 30,000miles depending on use/power levels

Just stay clear of the REDLINE SHOCK PROOF, it took out many getrags in the skyline cars and its what i thought was the cause of this you should only use v160 talk. Oil technology has come along way in 14 years. A good quality dextron will be more than ok. I used redline D6 (dextron6) as used in autoboxes which the getrag requires and has been in mine and was perfect and is still going ok now. Or the bmw stuff as the M5 uses getrags very similar to the supra.

From reading up a bit more it appears that sticking to any Dexron II fluid WITHOUT rubber smoothing additives will be ok.

**Redline Shockproof used rubber additives and as above destroyed a few boxes.**

V160

D21065

Royal Purple SynchroMax

BMW MTF-LT1 or 2

etc etc...

Thing to note is that it's not a thick oil, it has a low viscosity. If it's Dexron-II and has a low viscosity then it should be ok.

But please don't blame me should you pick the wrong one.

Just to add to this thread. I had a little discussion with my mechanic (import specialist) after replacing the gear oil with some V160 I sourced. He said that the gearbox builder they uses always toyota automatic transmission fluid as its the same anyway. I know this has already been stated earlier in the thread. He finds no difference in performance.
