wilkorangerover
hi there iam thinking about buying a single turbo(prob auto) i would just like to know are they reliable like twin turbos for everyday running? or are they just to expensive to run? i have a classic supra (t88 1jz) for the weekends i was thinking about a t61 or something like that
steady_dave
Won't be cheap! Depends how much money you've got TBH
jevansio
hi there iam thinking about buying a single turbo(prob auto) i would just like to know are they reliable like twin turbos for everyday running? or are they just to expensive to run? i have a classic supra (t88 1jz) for the weekends i was thinking about a t61 or something like that The answers on here will range from "I've never had a problem in 5 years" to "feckin pile of crap, I wish I'd never bought it" If done properly there's no reason why a small single should be that unreliable, the lifetime of the autobox would be my first "reliability failure" issue. Normal expense costs will just be extra fuel/tyres/service costs, but there's always that chance it turns into a right 'ole money pit
Luxluc
Those people who have problems with single turbos are often those that just went for a single turbo without considering all the rest that comes with it (ecu, fuelling, cooling, ignition, ...). I think if set up properly (without looking too much on the $$$ (you can have a turbo kit for 4000 £ but when going the complete route, 10k £ is more realistic)), a single turbo Supe can be more reliable than a BPU Supe. gaz1
a single turbo supra, with all the right bits to go with it, and mapped and installed properly can be more reliable than a stock supe. but beware if any of the above is not done correctly in can be more unreliable than a tvr:D

rob wild
Depends on how much money you have to play with If its an auto eventually you are going to need a rebuild. Then you have two options manual 6 speed cost about £3400ish or an uprated autobox and hi stall cost well how much have you got
wilkorangerover
fuel / tyres is not the issue, the the engine / turbo factor ..... , would a 500 bhp be ok then for everyday running ? cheers
JamieP
Get the engine checked out before you start,, then get somebody that knows what they are doing to install the kit and all will be fine.
wilkorangerover
well, i`ll buy one whats already done as there so cheap (in this market) any suggestions? t61, t67???
JamieP
Cheap ones are normally cheap because they are sh1t setups, be careful if buying cheap as will cost you in the long run.
Jazzy
A well set up car still isn't going to be exactly 'cheap'. As a road car, either a T61 or T67 should be more than adequate for your needs.
Luxluc
If you aim for a 500 bhp daily driver (which is very nice power on the public roads), be careful with the clutch setup (not to extreme clutch and don't forget that lightened flywheels can be noisy). SteveR
I'm reminded of a post I think Jake made some time ago, when talking about single turbo supras. I think it went something like this: - cheap - reliable - fast ...pick 2.
imi
I'm reminded of a post I think Jake made some time ago, when talking about single turbo supras. I think it went something like this: - cheap - reliable - fast ...pick 2. - smart. For a daily driver, i'd go for a quick spooling turbo for that added low-mid torque....something like a T61DBB 0.68AR Edited December 16, 2008 by imi (see edit history)
