suspension issue

I have been having a clanking noise coming from the rear of my car for awhile. I finally found where it is coming from. I installed Koni adjustables and the center nut will not tighten down all the way so the clanking is coming from the top mount of the shock. When I push up and down on the rear corner I can see it is coming from the top of the shock mount moving where the center nut is. I have not yet figured out how to fix this since the nut spins and will not tighten or even loosen and the shaft is not spinning. I don't know if the threads are damaged or something. Has anyone seen this before or have any ideas or suggestions of what I can do. I've installed shocks before but never seen this. What am I missing. BTW this is a 97 TT. please help. Thanks.
