View Full Version : More Sub woofer questons!

Hi,

I'm building a sub woofer enclosure for the back of my car. Basically I'm going to build a cabinet behind the back seats with two 10" subs in it and an amp.

Should I put a divider in between the two subs in the enclosure or can I leave the enclosure as one big box??

Should the enclosure be sealed or have a vent?

Cheers,

Paul.

By the way, when I'm done I'll be happy to share the template and plans with anyone, or even cut out the pieces of wood and send them to you for assembly!

Cheers,

Paul.

Paul,
I would go with a sealed enclosure. you do not always need to divide the subs but make sure the box you make is the right size in liters or cubic ft for the subs to operate in.
What subs and amp are you going for?
Also make sure you use good quality MDF and ensure it is properly sealed.

cheers

hi paul

1.if u fit a divider u will get better results
2,ported or sealed depends on the sub being used different subs work better in different enclosers.
the encloser vol is also specific to each different sub,as is the port or ports if u go with ported box,u also need to allow for the vol of the port & speaker displacement on top of the vol required for the sub if u really want it to work @ its best,

if ur sub can do sealed or ported, you need to decide on the type of bass required for the design to be taillored to suit

sealed will be punchy, where as ported can be tuned with the port to give bass response to a lower frequency

but its more to personal taste really unless ur entering sound offs

I'm not usre which subs and amp I'm gonna go for! Definately 10" subs and a decent amp, probably a kenwood one as they seem pretty decently priced. I dont want to spend more than 200 quid for the amd and two subs really.

The enclosure is coming along by the way. Got the top and two sides on!

I've got the hard bit of making pieces to go over the wheels now!!

Paul.

umm

how can u be making the box when u aint got the subs yet to know the encloser vol required?????:stupid:

I'm working on the general rule of 1 square foot for a 10" sub. I should have 2.5sq foot in total. Hopefully this will be enough?

Paul.

baldy
12-01-04, 22:15
where does this rule cum from???

i have lanzar 10's designed as a free air sub!

but mobile muscle with the software they use cum up with a design of .6 cubic foot + speaker displacement + 2 x 2" ports 16.47" long and that works very well with a very good frequency gragh, tuned to 6th order 36 hz

as far as im aware there is no generall rule its all down to speaker parameters, but i do stand to be corrected by the experts on this.

you may get lucky & hit the right combination as car interior cums into it as well, but from experience u may well be dissapointed with the results u get,

i found the cost of buying a proper design was well worth it for the end result

baldy,

Paul R
12-01-04, 22:25
I read that on a web site somewhere!! Maybee it's bollocks! d'oh
!!

I'll just get subs that are ok for 1sq foot each. I'm sure someone told me that as long as you have the minimum then you should be ok??

The enclosures are going to be sealed by the way.

Paul.

hi paul

i dunno if mat harwood has the software to do the above but just dun a search ,u can get alan burton of mobile muscle @

www.carsound.net/mmuscle/ this is 1 very knowledgeable man on car hifi enclosers

but if u get in touch beware when ever ive delt with him in the past its @ least an hour on the phone to sort summit out

You don't need software or anything to do sealed enclosures, only ported or bandpass ones. You do need to know the correct enclose size though, which should be in the specs for the sub. It varies quite a lot - I bought a sub specifically because it had a small enclosure volume. You need to work out the dimensions of your enclosure to give you the correct volume. There's a bit of leeway, but it will sound much better in the correct volume.

Paul R
12-01-04, 23:37
Thats what I wanted to hear!! :)

Well I know my maximum volume. So what I'm going to do is get two subs that are good for that volume or less.

If they require a smaller volume then I'll put dividers in the middle of the enclosure to produce the correct volume!

Cheers,

Paul.

Paul I got my subs from Motorworld.

JBL GT3-10 £30, they are sorta end of line but who gives a shit.

My amp was £250 from Halfrauds, but it is a 5 speaker amp.

Total spent £310 (bought another sub ready for new boot box)

No expense spared then! :innocent:

Why not get 1 good sub, making a smaller box, and a decent amp.
If you're on a budget, I'd go for the Alpine MRP-M350, and a 2 ohm sub, (dual 4). SWR-1041D, for example.

That way you're not lugging around a really heavy box, and getting better equipment at the same time.

Stick with a sealed enclosure and get some wadding for it.

Too late, nearly built the box

I probably will spend a bit more on the subs to tell you the truth!! :)

Are your subs ok for a sealed enclosure and what volume do they require?

ok is there an idiots guide to bass box building and subs as about the only part i understood was "good quility MDF" didn't understand anything in baldy's first post:stupid: and i want a bass box

Paul R
13-01-04, 17:10
I thin it goes like this.

Go for a sealed enclosure as this is the easiest box to build.

1, pick a sub or subs.
2, find out how many litres or cubic feet of space they need to operate properly.
3, build a box with sufficient capacity to house the sub.

easy!!

A sealed enclosure is one that is completely air tight.

My enclosure is about 2.5cubic feet. I'm getting two 10" sony subs which will just fit nicely in the box!

Paul.

Matt,

At the risk of saying something vaguely related to the topic of subs...

Do you sell acoustic wadding, not dynamat... I'm looking at building a 1.25cuft sealed enclosure for a 12" MTX RoadThunder and have been advised that it would help!

Matt Harwood
14-01-04, 12:47
Yep, it's about £5-6 per 2m roll. - Well worth doing.

Patrick_Devlin
14-01-04, 12:49
£5-£6???

Is that depending on who you sell it to! ;)
What would you say the smallest enclosure for a 12" sub would be? 1cuft!?!?

14-01-04, 13:16
Pat, smallest one that springs to mind is a Kicker with a recommended 0.7, but I'm sure if I did some digging around, I could probably find smaller.
Smaller boxes to have their limitations and trade-offs though. Lower output levels, less frequency response etc.

Roy, at least a 1.7 didn't scare you!

Is there any need to have the box wedge shaped or can it be plain box shaped? I think I'll go for a 1cuft, add to that the displacement of the speaker, and I think that'll be it for the boot of the supe!

Paul R
14-01-04, 14:23
The box should NOT be square or you will get distortion.

Paul.

Patrick_Devlin
14-01-04, 14:29
Thats what I originally thought. The pressure wave from the back of the cone would bounce directly back upto the speaker. I've always thought that a wedge was the way to go... But I've seen regular square boxes, do these have internal deflectors or something like that? Would the acoustic padding reduce or remove it?
