View Full Version : Bloggin!
I just started a blog :)
I'm so hopeless at web/html/anything code-like, that I figured this was the way forward.
I've started off with a mini review of a newish Dell server that I quite like.
It's here: http://www.css-networks.com (come on Google.. spider me ;) )
I intend to write little bits every now and then, some particular methods and tricks I do that I'm not sure people know of, that sort of stuff, and the occasional rant about stuff I hate.
What do you think? I wish the photos were more like a slide show - i.e. next/previous buttons. I think I might have to look at the NextGen plug-in or something for that. Any knowledgeable WordPress folks out there?

ah shit.
I haven't done the public DNS records.
d'oh
1 min.
Bugger. That's killed the big launch! :D
I've done the DNS record now, but my el-cheapo DNS provider doesn't reload the zone for ages and runs cached for something stupid like 12 hrs :(
Maybe you could have a look tomorrow and let me know what you think? :)
oh yeah. That was quicker than I expected :D
I've done another post on my blog. No outside visits yet though :( :D
Is it a good blog? I need a slight preview before sampling.
I have a love/hate relationship with them. :D

Sorted. :D

Probably only interesting to IT people I suppose, and then only people dealing with the stuff I deal with :)
I think I should put a Supra page on there too though.

Obviously it was seen much earlier than the 12 hours you thought (Guess it was a subdomain you were sorting), they probably have a TTL of 12 hours, which isn't too bad, but if you're only sorting out DNS on your bit, and not affecting their nameservers, it should be an instant change :D
Your blog looks good. I didn't know anything about blogs until last month, when I installed WordPress and had a play with it.
Here is my blog:

By the way, your urls can be improved to have proper names rather than ending in ?cat=7 etc..
If you go into settings, you can provide a new format for permalinks that is more readable (and better for indexing by google, I think).

I like yours. I like your domain too! :)
I prefer your theme to mine too, but maybe it's the use of pictures that helps. I might try the default WordPress theme again.
Thanks for the tip re the urls. I was concerned they weren't search engine friendly. I have the Google XML sitemap plugin running, and registered with google webmaster tools for monitoring, but I'm not in the index on Google yet.
I also have the all-in-one SEO pack installed, which so far looks like it's just adding meta tags.

Well, I run internal DNS here, so everything was hunky dorey for me, but out in the big wide world I use 123-reg's poor slow nameservers. After making the change (adding an A record for blog.css-networks.com), I was querying their servers directly to watch for the record appearing. I usually do this but last time I was doing it for a customer, it just wasn't happening, and their support people told me they run cached for 12 or 24hrs!
Maybe they only cache existing records rather than whole zone files.
As it happens, I have moved the blog to www.css-networks.com , 'cause Google's webmaster tools don't work with anything that doesn't start with www. The blog responds to both though.
