View Full Version : New Metallica album: Death Magnetic.
I'm hearing that it's a return to the Metallica of old. Two 8 minute plus songs, time changes aplenty. It seems like they've reverted to the old 'riff tapes' method too.
I can't wait to hear it. I'm hoping for something that contains the best parts of MoP and AJFA.
Hopefully Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hamnett will be able to influence the sound a bit more this time around, I keep buying the albums just to keep the set going but I'm going to sample this one before I part with any cash, St Anger was enough to put me off anything new from them.
Been digging and Trujillo has been involved pretty heavily (incl singing) but Kirk was less involved due to his wife's pregnancy.
I've found a snippet that includes *GASP* a friggin Hammett solo.
I was watching a few clips on Youtube a month or so ago and it seemed like they were taking more notice of Rob which is a good thing, I just had another look and found this one which has a bit of a nice sound to it:

I'd given up all hope on Metallica that I wasn't even aware there was a new album on the way. It presumably has to be better than St Anger... but I'm still not hopeful of a return to form. I might have to dig out my live CD's from the Nowhere else to roam tour now though :)
Michael,

Now that sounds like it'll get my juices going. AJFA is one of my all-time favourite albums by any artist.

Oh man. That acoustic clip had me smiling like a loon. I'm getting good vibes. Some of Hatfields throwaway licks were old school 'Tallica. Kirk even has long hair again.
Good stuff. MoP is still my fave album so anything that sounds like that gets  from me. :)
its gonan be gonna be great fo sure. St anger was diablolical for Metallica.. i think people goin to Reading are gonna be blown away.. frankly dont deserve it with all that indie GRR lol. Cant wait :D agreeing witn REDM here hopfully more like old stuff.. and Black albulm.
The Black album was the beginning of the end of my interest in Metallica. I'd been into them since Kill 'Em All and, for me, they reached a peak with ...And Justice.
Load, Re/Load and St.Inker did nothing for me.
I know people will argue that bands change but they should always change for the better. Fugazi, my fave band of all time, sound very different on their last album than their first but in a good way. Each album being a honing of a sound that is uniquely theirs but also allowing for experimentation and prgression.
IMO Metallica didn't do that. What they were doing around the time of ...And justice was pretty unique. Sure, there were sound-a-likes but then 'Tallica seemed to feel that they'd be better trying to incorporate indie-rock and nu-metal elements. It didn't work artistically although the financial rewards seem obvious.
I used to really love Metallica even though they were so far removed from my punky/hardcore musical upbringing. I really hope this is a return to form for them. Although, if nothing else, the inevitable 'making of' DVD looks like it'll be worth a watch.

Yup. Some kind of monster was very interesting viewing, I still can't believe how bitter Dave Mustain was after all those years... Wouldn't have had you down as a big fan either.
Wouldn't have had you down as a big fan either.
Closet case! :D
I've got all sorts of Metallica oldies, all the singles and 12"s, the videos, the Live Sh*t Binge and Purge set etc etc.
In fact, for a band so different from my usual tastes I've spent an inordinately huge sum of money on them!
I must dig some of it out.

It will be interesting to see how Rick Rubin changes the sound from what Bob Rock produced, especially since Rob Trujillo will be more involved, and lets hope for some Guitar Solo's this time!.
Think my fave album would have to be 'Ride the Lightning' though, love the sound and the guitars in that album.
Definatly looking forward to 'Death Magnetic' though!, from hearing some clips it sounds promising!
I still can't believe how bitter Dave Mustaine was after all those years....
I think it's more the way things were done more than anything, Megadeth went on to be better anyway ;)

I've loved them since kill em all. My favourite band ever. St Anger was very dissappointing. I entered a competition on the net a few weeks ago where they were offering a pre-order of the new album, and a chance to win a Metallica guitar :)
On an aside, I'm wearing my Master of Puppets t-shirt to Alice Cooper tonight. :p

That must've been cool. Tell me, how did they cope with Cliff's bass solo on Orion.

i have seen them live a few times but i have never heard them play Orion (well not with Jason)
TyranoSupraRex

Orion was the best track they played all day. The sun was setting and the weather was hotter than Satans ball bag. They had a screen behind them with clouds passing by at warp speed in colours that matched the sky! When they first started playing the crowd went ape and they didn't dissappoint!! You know Cliff would've done it better but as much as I hate to say it, Robert Trujillo is pretty amazing!
Here is the lineup from the day:
Creeping Death
Fuel
Wherever I May Roam
The God That Failed
Kirk Solo1
The Unforgiven
Battery
Master Of Puppets
The Thing That Should Not Be
Kirk Solo2
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Disposable Heroes
Leper Messiah
Orion
Damage, Inc.
Sad But True
Nothing Else Matters
One
Enter Sandman
Whiskey in the Jar
Seek and Destroy

haven't been to see them since he joined :(
that's a mighty fine line up you saw by the way (Leper messiah live is fantastic :))
I loved that bit in Some Kind of Monster where Dave and Lars are having that chat about him leaving Metallica.... how could you be in a room with Lars and not want to continually punch him?
Back to Orion:
I've just been watching some Youtube footage and I note that Hetfield didn't do the 2nd solo. He used to and is IIRC also credited with it in the MoP notes.
When they did it live did they sit down on the drum riser like the old days?
TyranoSupraRex
24-07-08, 16:24
Nope, they were standing, Hetfield in the middle, and one on either side of the stage all spread out - Bearing in mind I was in a 3-pints-of-red-wine haze at this point... so the details are a little fuzzy. The beer was warm so switched to wine...

Meh, I might download the new album, but I lost all interest after ...and justice. The black album had some good heavy riffs, but could have been any band and after that they were just dull. Personally, I don't see how they can go back to their old style of playing as Lars simply isn't the drummer he used to be, he's barely been able to play half of their old stuff for a long time - a shame really as the stuff he was doing on ...and justice was brilliant.
Hmm!! Everyone has a different opinion on Metallica but mine is that their best stuff was in the middle and the Black Album was one of the best. Songs like "The god that failed" and "My friend of misery" were terrific. Also "Nothing Else Matters" has to be one of the best songs ever. Load is also a great album but Re-load was a bit disappointing.
Depressingly enough it's my funeral song.....:d
I still like some of the earlier stuff but after listening to St Anger I felt that Metallica had had their day.........I hope I'm wrong..!!:(

Saw them @ Download 06 when they playes MOP in full.
Orioin was amazing, full version with james, rob and kirk stood on a platform above Lars, amazing!
Their show @ Wembley last year was amazing, just to see the bands reaction to the crowds singing at the end of "Memory Remains"
I think St.Anger would have been an amzaing breakthrough album for an up and coming band, but not for Metallica's return to the studio...
I've heard Death Magnetic is supposed to bridge the gap between Justice and Black and I really hope it does.

Nothing Else Matters was my first dance at my wedding :) Doing it in style!
I found the show at Wembley last year a little dissappointing after download 06. The sound quality IMO was cr@p. They still rocked though!
Can't wait either. I haven't bought an album for ages but I'll have to get this.
I hope it's good.
I have a lot of time for Metallica. They are my favourite band. Especially up until '88! I find that funny, because that is when I was born :)
They taught me how to play guitar. Used to just sit in my room and play all through KEA, RTL, MOP, AJFA and Binge & Purge Seattle over and over, making sure I had it nailed. Certainly helped me get technique down to begin with! :)

Yep, agree with all of that. Especially Nothing Else Matters, what a song.
I remember Iron Maiden lost the plot big time, and then Bruce came back with Brave New World. Talk about getting back on track ! Hopefully Metallica will make a similar come back.

Metallica: A Culture Show Special
BBC2 11:00pm-11:30pm (30 minutes) Sun 31 Aug
To celebrate the forthcoming release of the heavy metal group's first album for five years, Death Magnetic, Verity Sharp visits Norway to gain access to their summer tour of Europe. Going backstage, she captures their rehearsals and pre-show activities and interviews band stalwarts James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich
ooo that's so past my bedtime but... but... but...
Has it really been 5 years since their last? Wow, I've been out of the scene longer than I'd thought. (Started losing interest around Load).

I've pre-ordered the special box set. Heard a few tracks on metallica.com.
We wanted a thrash album, they've done a thrash album!
Seems as though the album has been leaked already but an interview with Lars suggests he doesn't mind, I wonder if it's been done on purpose to track downloaders and go legal at a later date? Or maybe the legit orders in advance are enough to buy him more treasures so he's happy enough?
I think I'll just wait for my pre-order to arrive.
Kerrang just played the new video, it's a bit of an epic.

My thoughts, it's not One and take that bloomin' drum kit away from Lars and replace it with one that doesn't have that nasty snare(?) sound.

I downloaded it this morning so that i could check it before i buy it (and i do intend to buy it on release date - i always buy metallica albums, its the only music i do) and i love the album. Different style altogether so not necessarily like the metallica of old but there are enough similarities in parts. The new style works very well, some of the rifts are simply awesome. Good to hear the solos back as well. Fantastic album alround.
Well, that was shit. I won't even waste bandwidth downloading the album.
It's a bit 'meh' for me, perhaps the hype on the new album set the expectation too high. The song just doesn’t have the energy of the older stuff, though their age might play a part there :D
Still seems a darn sight better than their efforts in the last few years.
*heads off to piratebay to get the rest* (sample for buying, which will happen either way!)

Yeah deffinately dont get it expecting a carbon copy of Kill em all cos that wont happen but for a "new style" metallica its damn good with enough "snippets" of the old to satisfy most people.
Just had a quick listen to album (got to love PB!), it's seems pretty good so far, but nothing epic. Need to listen to all songs in full before casting a judgement :D Definitely a step back towards their roots, no question of that.
I watched the Culture Show special from last week the other night.
It made me want to watch Some Kind of Monster again... what a bunch of tw@ts...! so compelling though.

...take that bloomin' drum kit away from Lars and replace it with one that doesn't have that nasty snare(?) sound.
I fully agree with you but thought I was the only one that hated that sound. In all the old good albums they have none of that "thunk-thunk-thunk" sound in the background banging away at your ears. The whole of the St Anger album was full of it, which ruined some of the slightly nicer riffs (if you could call them that on an otherwise terrible album).
Nice to find someone with taste
TyranoSupraRex
05-09-08, 10:27
It's probably just Lars trying to be noticed... he is a bit of a whiney bi!tch...
You can just picture him in the studio lying on the floor throwing a tantrum saying... "Rick... James guitar is louder than my drums..... more volume on the drums pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease"
martin1982
05-09-08, 10:27
That snare is a work of evil, altho thankfully you don't seem to hear it as much when they play live.
Part of me gets the impression that it's Lars way of saying "See I can still drum like the old days, now you can all here me!"
garetheves
05-09-08, 12:23
He has reverted back to a "normal" snare in the new album though not the Tom (i think thats what its called, im sure Animal will correct me) that he used in St Anger.

Anyone go to their concert last night at London O2 Arena? Me and 3 mates went up, thanks to two of them being members of the Metclub website, tickets were £5 each :)
Number 1, the O2 Arena is superb.
Number 2, they played in the round and as we were standing .. is the first time I've been so close to a band.
Number 3, they didn't disappoint ;)
Love the new album although probably not as much as the Black album which was my first venture into Metallica :)
Have to agree with a few people on here, St. Anger was rubbish although they did play a track last night off of it which Hetfield said "we don't care what you think of St. Anger, that song rocks" :d

Does it have any old school thrash guitar on it?
Yeah, it still sounds different from the original stuff, but its very up tempo and more thrashy. Some of it reminds me of Slayer in some aspects. My Apocalypse is a good example.
First impressions of this album were....well, it's 'alright' but it's no Black Album/Kill em All.

No! Complex is what made them great.
I don't agree. Yes they did have complex riffs, but only a few per song, whereas now they seem to have sat in a studio, played a riff, clicked on copy, pasted here and there, clicked on another etc, until they had 5 minutes of chopping and changing tempo.
I also feel some of the lyrics feel forced and rushed. Like they sat down and thought "...hmmm, the public liked the tracks about death. How can we do some lyrics that they'll like...", instead of it sounding more personal it sounds made to measure.
Don't get me wrong, Metallica have always been and will always be my favourite group of all time, but I feel a little let down. Maybe they should have quit while they were ahead and just toured playing the old stuff we love.
After listening to the album 100 times or more I can say its definately a grower. On first hearing it I was a little dissapointed, but now love it.

I understand the messy comments, or it being too complex. I think most of the songs on Puppets were perfect as they were fast heavy, technical, but they all flowed kinda predictably which made them easier to pick up.
These new ones are just gonna take a bit more getting used to :)

I'm starting to take to them too, although I still think they're a little messy. :)
After listening to the album 100 times or more I can say its definately a grower. On first hearing it I was a little dissapointed, but now love it.

Yeah i agree , didnt like it at first but its growing on me .
A step in the right direction anyway !
So, the UK tour dates have been announced, anyone going? :)
Tickets on sale Friday I believe http://www.metallica.com/page.asp?id=13367
I'm tempted to get tickets for Sheffield or Manchester but having seen people at both I've been disappointed by the sheer size of the places, I'm not a big fan of arena stuff but I guess it might be possible to get in there early enough to be nearer the front.
Maybe one of us should join the "Metclub" and then buy tickets for everyone here today? And by "one of us" I mean anyone else but me ;)
I'm still struggling with the album, a couple of tracks are working out OK but the rest haven't made an impression yet.

Sheffield for me, for that reason, it's a smaller venue. The view depending on where you sit in the MEN Arena can be crap too.

Now that sounds like a blinding idea, and not me either. :)
I'm liking the album , that track "Suicide and Redemption" is awesome imo :)
SECC in Glasgow is rubbish but i'll still try and get some tickets .

You're wrong I'm afraid, but thanks for your opinion :)

Am i , sorry - I should have known to think before putting my opinion in front of the mighty Thorin .

That's OK, you'll remember for next time ;)
It's just a repetitive stringing together of 3 maybe 4 riff's in my opinion.

Thats very true for the most of the track though .
Sometimes its the simple things that keep me amused though ;)

suicide and redemption was one of the first songs that i got into from the album, it's not as good as previous instrumentals, needs more solos! I liked Unforgiven 3 early on as well.
I can see some slayer in one of the tracks and hints of Justice and Kill em all in other tracks. At first I thought the solos were a bit of a let down but they seem to be growing on me to.

oh yeah and Machine Head supporting liking the sound of that ! :D But not the £40 price tag :(
Monday night? thats a crappy night for a gig at the O2! Thankfully they have another on the 28th!
Machine head would be cool, Davidian was awesome :)
Definately liking the new album more everytime I play it, but how come the production on Garage Days Re-Revisited is so much better - even the original 1980's stuff!!!
Why do the richest metal band in the world suffer from the worst productions on all their albums, except perhaps Master... and Black than anyone else??
Bought this tonight sfter spotting it in Asda. Will have a listen tomorrow......;)

Does anyone else find the quality a little iffy on the new album. I find the sound a little distorted from time to time.

very informative, it always strikes me as a shame that Reign in Blood (Slayer), seems much quieter than my other CDs :(
Get the decade of Aggression album, that's nice and loud :)

Its what they want, im sure its the sound they like, and a producer has to do what they want

You mean like a date? I still haven't gotten over the last one.
Looking on the sheff arena site it says tickets on sale 9am Friday... but if you actually go to the buy tickets site and look up the event it says 9am tomorrow. I'm hoping it is actually friday as I'll not have access to the internets tomorrow morning.

 after all these years it's still one that gets played every month or so, usually only if I have a fast car to drive :D
I have mislaid my copy... I've seen it about, but dont have it to hand, and I need it on my iPod :)
Thorin , sent you a PM!
Hope it works for you! I've just attempted and it seems to work, goes through to the card details etc..
Should also make people aware that ticketmaster charge a £5.50 booking fee on EACH ticket! Not sure if its just for the pre-sale tickets though?

Standing at Glasgow, sitting at London so the G/F can see!

Bl**dy seated in the nose bleed section. It was either that or not at all, so I opted for cr@p seats. Not a happy bunny but not a whole lot you can do about it I guess....
You?
Damn, is it sold out already at the 02 on the Saturday? Cant find anything!? :( Make that Saturday AND Monday :(

Yep. I've just tried to get some myself. Noooo chance, unless you want to pay about double face value.
I've got tickets for Saturday at the 02 :D - going with my brother - should be excellent.
Not heard the new album yet, must pick up a copy asap!

Where did you get them from? More importantly, do they have any left?
