View Full Version : So I've got this curry thing for my lunch...
It's in a box that comes packed and you just put it in the microwave.
My mum scared me a bit the other day by telling me that rice, however it's cooked, and then cooled down and left is the biggest spreader of food poisoning.
There is a packet of rice in the box that's kind of vacuum packed.
My question is...would you eat it?
You only live once ;)
I think this thread needs a poll.
Even if now in my paranoia I can literally see bacteria in the rice..?!

I think this thread needs a poll.
I have added a poll.
Yes, once its been in the microwave the germs can't survive can they ?
I have added a poll.
I have voted.
Why on earth would rice be any worse for food poisoning than anything else? If the food's piping hot when served, it'll be fine.
We all have to die sometime..... even if it is death by boiled rice :d
You should see some of the things I've eaten in the past. Some of it approaching roadkill when I did a bushcraft weekend LOL
Yes, once its been in the microwave the germs can't survive can they ?
My mum said it's the reheating thing that's the issue.
I voted, but no offence intended ;)
Couldn't resist the multiple choice - option 4 was just too tempting :D
My mum said it's the reheating thing that's the issue.
Maybe, i don't know for sure.
Although i got really ill once from fish fingers that i reheated.
Picture if you like projectile liquids from both ends simultaneously and you get the idea of how nasty that was (shudders) :D
Eat it you big girl's blouse! Chicken is far worse as a carrier of death and deformity!! :)
Picture if you like projectile liquids from both ends simultaneously and you get the idea of how nasty that was (shudders) :D
Exactly! I don't want this. :D
What colour rice is it?
Ermmm white, is that worse?!
If it wasn't safe to re-heat and eat they wouldn't be able to sell it!!
Besides, I eat re-heated rice all the time and there is nothing majorly wrong with me! Slightly crazy, but I put that down to work!

have you noticed how rice can look like insect larvae sometimes :)
Ermmm white, is that worse?!
OMG not "WHITE RICE"
OMG not "WHITE RICE"
:rlol:

You were eating while approaching roadkill. That's evidence of strong stomach right there.
Definitely yes :) I have them practically everyday for lunch, never had a bad one!
OMG not "WHITE RICE"
Isn't that a song by The Clash?
Ok I'm going to eat it I think.
It's been nice knowing you all.....
I like the results of the poll. :D
You were eating while approaching roadkill. That's evidence of strong stomach right there.
No, that's the method of catching it.... using roadkill as a lure :d Two meals in one ;)
I'll have it if you don't want it, I'm starving!
Just make sure you really blast it (yes that is the technical term :p) in the microwave and you will be ok Charlotte :)
Pasta is a risky one too I've been told, so I'm off to reheat last nights spag bol for my lunch. Man I like to live on the edge

I always re-heat spagbol as it's nicer the next day, hasn't killed me yet

Yeah that.
Ive been told that about Rice and have never been tempted to heat a take away if its gone a little cool on the way home but Microwaved curry has always been fine with me, never caused any problems. Except for the flavours:D
Ermmm white, is that worse?!
Long grain or short?
I'm sure you'll be fine if you eat it, never knew that about rice though but I'm safe with my beans and sausage for my lunch... i hope :)

Exactly, half the reason people get so ill with colds and all that is they spend their lives making sure everything is clinically clean and the body never builds up a resistance.
So you get the runs for a few days, you either don't do it again or your body adjusts... :)
Besides, the basic bloke food groups such as pizza, indian and chinese are even better the following day after being nuked for a few minutes.
My mum scared me a bit the other day by telling me that rice, however it's cooked, and then cooled down and left is the biggest spreader of food poisoning.
That's nothing. Did you realise that underwear accumulates 2 million types of bacteria which grows on your privates every day?
Stop wearing underwear!
Also that an average door knob has traces of 45 peoples faeces on it. Don't open doors!
The air you're breathing has been breathed by an average of 115 people and contains traces of yellow fever, the bubonic plague and two dozen bacterial nasties.
Stop breathing!
I wonder if she's okay. Don't women eat slow?

Sorted... I'll stand by the door outside naked not breathing and I'll live forever :) (Think my client may not be best impressed though)

I heated it up too much, it's like molten!
Vicki does that. Just to make definitely sure it's fully cooked she turns it into charcoal.

I didn't mean to, I got chatting in the kitchen and forgot about it.

Aren't woman, like, genetically predisposed to being good in the kitchen or am I thinking of Gordon Ramsey?
I didn't mean to, I got chatting in the kitchen and forgot about it.
Maybe it's cause deep down you knew that you didn't want to eat it so you subconsciously destroyed it ;)
So all this was for nothing....
Just eat the thing and stop being picky:D if worst comes to the worst youll be on the toilet all night:D
There is nothing I won't reheat/eat
No I'm still eating it, albeit a bit slower in case I burn my mouth.
No I'm still eating it, abeit a bit slower in case I burn my mouth.
Thats a good girl:p

Mine wasn't as nice as it was last night :( The half bottle of tabasco sauce I put in the sauce as an experiment gave me a nice kick today though! Usually my food experiments fail but I've hit on a winner this time :D
Although I've had to drop my office air con to 18C now as I'm burning up :D
What do you mean stop? :search:
The same applies, but to your trousers. :D
Even if now in my paranoia I can literally see bacteria in the rice..?!
Just pretend they're "friendly bacteria" :)

I'm that hot at the minute I'm going to take them off and lock my office door!
As I like living on the edge, I'll risk the door :D

Riiiiight..... do you mind if I don't call round with the spare vacuum cleaner after all...? :D :p

I just can't talk my way out of that one can I....
A man walks down the street once naked and he never lives it down (I was a little sozzled one night and got dared by a bunch of mates... oh well :p)
Are you still alive Charlotte? :search:
Yes thanks. :D
All seems to be ok here. Well except I just got a papercut and had to fill out an accident report.

No - there is even 'papercut categories' for the degree of the slice.

Haha, as soon as i read the question i was looking to quote you both and say exactly what u just said Gav lol.
Think of your body like a boxers nose. Take enough hits and you can withstand one hell of a punch.
You can't make an omlette without breaking a few eggs.
I'm deadly serious, honest!
 H&S gone mad.
it wouldnt be a problem im sure.
When i buy an indian takeaway and i dont eat it all, i always save the rest for the next day

I'm not some namby pamby - I do eat most stuff, I was just interested to see what everyone else thought.
I remember eating one of those microwave curries with rice for breakfast at 6am once.
Damn good for breakfast :-)
I'd eat it, but then again I have a goat-like digestion system and once ate two gammon steaks raw as a teenager thinking they were ham.... no problems :-)
Also ate a phone sim card once but didn't really want to check if I fully digested that.

You can.

You can.
really?
You can.
An omlette with just a single egg? Then you're not breaking 'a few'.
Or you talking about that horrible carton of egg liquid you can buy...?
I was thinking of non-egg solutions initially but it's possible to extract the contents of the egg without breaking it, blown eggs, a syringe etc
Vegan types can still have omlettes with their odd alternatives.

Pedantic as ever ;)
Its also possible to just throw the egg in, shell and all.
Its also possible to perform surgery with a rusty knife though.

Hey! I'm not the one making the wild claims about things here :p

That reminds me of an interesting "fact" about Superglue - _apparently_ it was developed for use in the Vietnam war to repair soldiers by sticking wounds together - why do you think it sticks your fingers together better than whatever you were actually trying to glue?

Thats completely true. Of course its totally different from the glue now, the stuff then literally wouldn't come apart without taking lots of skin.

Google says no. ;)
Google says no. ;)
What was it then oh Loctite one? :D
It must be something to do with war or an Apollo/Shuttle mission.... virtually everything comes from one of those ;)
Google says no. ;)
Oh come on! Have u never told anyone that just to see if they try it?
You can't make an omlette without breaking a few eggs.
I thought that was the idea? :search:
I used to like sticking my fingers together with super glue, much to the concern of my mother, and it really itched!
I had a difficult childhood. :)

Chicken, rice and petri dish's are great at breeding nasties.
Rule of thumb. You can reheat all foods twice if zapped in the microwave.
Its a bad idea to reheat take-aways as you dont always know how many times it was cooked before.
You could already be eating last nights left overs.

If I were you , I would not touch that. But personally I have eaten loads of those things - but not anymore.
Ex student.. immune to all!
Have eaten 5 day old cold meat feast pizza not stored in fridge.
Have eaten 3 day old prawn cocktail non-refrigerated, no sweat.
Have eaten 2 week old lamb madras, spent two days on the side then put in fridge.
Have eaten 7 day past date pork sausages left on side after cooking for an extra 4 days with no issue.
Numerous curries from local curry house rice+chicken+sauce left on side for an evening then put in fridge, eaten 3 days later.
Fine! No side effects!
Last thing that upset my guts was a fresh tuna salad believe it or not!!! (I think my body doesn't like fresh food anymore!!).
My favourite ever Indian takeaway got shut down years ago because so many people got food poisoning, I used to order from there twice a week as a student and never even had a dodgy stomach afterwards! :)

Christ you must have a cast iron stomach dude. The thought of those things alone is giving me the sh*ts. :eyebrows:
I tend not to eat stuff that looks worse before it goes in than the result that comes out. If you want to warm up two full colostomy bags and eat them, I applaud your bravado and admire your constitution.
