View Full Version : Engine & box installation - any tips?

I hope to be installing the NA engine and box over the next few days.

The engine and box is still in one bit (along with all the loom, etc still attached)

I was planning on dropping the engine in the same way as it was removed from the scrapper - with the gearbox pointed down and then manuvering the rest into place.

- Both the engine and the car still have the engine mounts attached. Is it easier to drop the engine with mount attached into the holes on the subframe, or to drop the engine onto the existing mounts?

- Can this job be done on my own? Not sure about this one!

I would not bother even trying on your own. Organise a bbq and a few beers and im sure you will have plenty to help.

NOTE - Dont supply beer until happy with job!

Don't even think about doing this by yourself :D. I managed with two people, but 3 people is best. The annoying part is keeping the gearbox pointing down allot as you push the engine in. remove the fan and radiator if they are still on the engine/car or you might end up damaging them.

I had one person at the end of the gearbox (underneath the car guiding it through the transmission tunnel.) Another pushing the crane and ideally the third person to watch everything else.

I would drop it in with the mounts on the engine as getting the nuts on the mounts (engine side) on will be a PITA (especially for torquing,) compared to screwing them in under the sub frame

Cool, thanks mate, that makes a lot of sense. Better make some friends in the area then :D

The rad will be taken out, but good point on the fan, that nearly got broken when we removed it.

Do you think it will go in okay with just the front up on axle stands?

You might get away with it just raised at the front. But better if the back was jacked too as it allows for easier access underneath...

Thanks again mate, I'll get the back end up on stands too :)

Very kind of you to offer, I really appreciate it! It's a bit of a big ask though as Slough is a good 30 mins away. I'll try a few of the locals first and see if anyone can help.

I would get a load leveller from Machine mart:

That lets you tip the engine back and forward, should make life a lot easier!
