That is a good explanation of how a wastegate works for n00bs, can a mod add the video into FAQ section for reference.

 

It also explains why the stock J-spec wastegate is too small to cope when the cats are removed, so would be worth adding to the BPU FAQ thread.

That's the first I've heard that. :blink: Don't think I've seen too many bpu specs saying bigger wastegate fitted.

What would be a cost effective solution to this Nic?

So what is the recommendation to get around this?

 

The easiest/cheapest solution is to fit a restrictor ring in the exhaust to limit the flow, although this is far from ideal.

 

The ideal, yet more expensive solution would be to machine out the wastegate opening and fit a new valve. The problem with this is that there is very little material around the wastegate opening to be able to open it out much wider. I have a seen a number of standard (unmachined) turbos with cracks between the wastegate opening and turbine opening, machining the wastegate opening will only make the area weaker and more susceptible to cracking.
