View Full Version : The keyboard on my laptop is broke
Hi Guys
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with latop keyboards.
Ive had my laptop for about 18 months now and the backspace button has given up. Which has become very annoying now as im not the best typist.
Im guessing you can change them? How big a job is it?
its a acer Aspire 5633WLMi
Acer keyboards are very cheap. I was quoted about £7 + vat a couple of weeks ago.
Do not use any of the websites pretending to be official Acer parts suppliers (£40 - £50 for a keyboard).
Call Acer on 0870 853 1000.
It's an easy job to do, although you'll think you're going to snap the plastic top cover when you're pulling it off. The cover usually goes from left to right above the top of the keyboard and also covers the power buttons. This covers the keyboard screws.
ah cheers mate
Yea ive been looking on the net and i found Acer parts 40-50 quid for the keyboard so it looks like you have saved me.
Ill give them a ring tomorrow u wanna come and fit it for me? lol
Does everything have to come out im assuming you cant acess from the top?
I'm off on Holiday in 12hrs and you're miles away anyway!
It's quite easy. You may have to pull screws out from underneath, or maybe the edges, I can't remember. But basically the piece that goes across the top of the keyboard and covers the screen hinges has to come out. You'll then see two small screws which when removed will allow you to lift the keyboard out. The keyboard might have double-sided sticky tape holding it in place too so don't be too scared to apply force. Ribbon cable connector is easy. Pull the old one out, and for the new one you slide the ribbon in with the locking mechanism/catch open, then slide the catch/locking mechanism shut afterwards.
I've replaced probably around 50+ dell laptop keyboards, and probably the same for IBM's too.
Piece of cake to swap - both of these were probably no more than about 5 screws and possibly a bit of plastic trim to remove.
Good luck - but I'm sure you'll be fine :)
