Painting Leather

Can leather items be painted?

 

I have an idea to use a fine brush and paint the Supra badge on my steering wheel to make it stand out more as it cant really be seen much.

 

I know leather is usually dyed but i dont know if it will take paint.

You can buy leather paint, how good it is i don't know.

 

Comes in spraycans usually.

Yeah, you should see my spraypainting skills.. the finish is like leather

There are lots of leather sprayers around seriously and they do a very very good job, i wouldnt trust getting a can and doing it yourself though lol

Done mine, with a small brush and normal hobby paint. Looked ok too.

You can use Artists Acrylic, just ensure you degrease the surface first. Acrylic paint is flexible and although it is water based, (Its like a high grade emulsion) it is fairly water resistant, i have used it to paint flying jackets and patches, give it a wipe with Dubbin when finished to increase flexibility. Shoe paint is also Acrylic and often comes with a degreaser, you could for example use white as a base then artist colours to over paint

Some places with offer to do this over retriming your seats as it is a lot cheaper and IMO can also look better (more original).

How about getting the liquid art guys to make up a badge to fit...should be easy enough to take dimensions or take a pattern ?

Leather is connolised (sp) its a thinners based colour. full inside costs around 500£. but for small bits its quite cheep. We do the rolls and bentleys as they are all coloured and fade quite quick.

need to mix flex into the paint, or if you just use normal paint with clear, itll just rub of after a while..hmm maybe you can try HUMBROL ENAMEL PAINT? those little £1 from the hobby shops, thick, and wont crumble of the leather like normal paint..
