View Full Version : What do I do with an injured bird?

Strange one I know but I found the dog jumping up and down on a baby bird earlier :( We rang the RSPB earlier and they said to leave it under a bush in the hope the parents would come but it's got to the point the parents have bu**ered off and the cats have come calling! The bird looks like it's broke it's leg, maybe wing. Is there anything we can do to help it? :(

It's a wild animal. RSPCA/RSPB won't be interested unless it's a rare or protected species. Let nature take its course.

I hate to say it but, kill it. That is all the RSPB will do.

What bird is it?

Unless it's protected, with a broken wing and leg you're best off breaking it's neck to be honest.

why kill it.

like Doug said.....leave it outside and let nature take its course, its probably going to die anyway without its parents.

i think the kindest thing to do would be put it out of its misery, harsh i know but if its badly hurt it must be in pain thats what id do anyway:(

GeordieSteve

:( Not liking the sound of that but the misses' dad is a exterminator and he said the same thing. We've got it wrapped up in a towel in a box full of holes at the mo

Doesn't look like a broken wing but a broken leg. I'm a firm believer in Karma... don't know what to do now!

Would be nice if people showed such humanity against....humans.

Anyway - thats a seperate topic. I see your point; tough one this....i'd still let nature take its course.

make it as comfortable as possible, eat some worms and regurgitate them down its throat (its what the parents would do!!!!!!!!)

GeordieSteve

Looks like we might have to bring the dog in... being jumped on by a 8 stone rottweiler isn't quite nature taking it's course :(

Gotta go with everyone else. It'd put it out of it's misery if you killed it. Quicker and less suffering than if a cat slowly eats it alive!

Homer
05-06-08, 22:27
If you put it out it the wild it will likely die a death very soon (eaten alive or just suffer with a broken leg). Survival chances are almost unless you live in a very built up area.

Best off just putting it out of its pain and leave it for the animals to dispose of.

Have had to do this many times when younger when birds get into the greenhouses, it's not easy the first time (I was only 10!)

Break its neck, pull its head upwards away from the body, its very quick and easy. I wouldnt consider doing anything else. Why leave it suffering.

bigcol
05-06-08, 22:32
or you could put it out of its misery and give it a nice funeral to ease your consience (spelt wrong)

when you look at it sensibly having a broken leg must hurt it like hell, when we get hurt we take pain relief, you cant really give it an anadin extra can you??? so prolonging its suffering when undoubtedly its going to die anyway is a lot more cruel than a quick painless neck squeeze

GeordieSteve

I've broke my arms before... it wasn't quite worth the suffering of having me killed? ...... ok I'm a big soft sh*te looking for an excuse not to kill it :(

but when you broke your arms no doubt you took some pain killers and had it plastered etc if you had left it for nature to heal you without anything it would have hurt and you would have been suffering, just a quick pull upwards with the neck and the suffering will stop

i found one being attacked by a cat so i put it in a shoebox and fed it milk with a syringe. Don't give it bread. That's bad apparently. Put it in a shoebox, hotwater bottle at the bottom and loads of tetowels on top so it doesn't get burn't. Lid down. Goodnight.

the parent won't come back for it. It will reject it.

In the mrning find some nice person on google who takes them in. They know what to do!

why dont you stop eating plants cause you are causing them pain too.....

stop breathing cause you are inhaling loads of microscopic living beings that are being suffocated by your bad breathe.....:)

GeordieSteve

Nope... no painkillers for a week as it happens. It hurt like hell but wasn't killed. Real dilemma here. Don't know if I can face doing it :(

Amanda found an injured bird. She put it in a box with leaves or something in our bedroom. She got up the next morning and it was flapping around the room. She took it outside and it eventually flew away off her hand properly, circled house roofs and went away all happy. Can only guess it had been stunned or in shock or something 'cause it got better quick enough.

Carl0s I prefer your plan... give it until the morning. It's just a baby... may well be shock (I'd be shocked if a rottweiler 300 times the size of me jumped up and down on me!)

i would suggest putting a bit of whole milk in with the water to give it a bit of calcium and vitamins (no im not taking the p1ss) you must try and keep its strength up if you want it to live through the night

DON'T feed wild birds milk, or bread. The bread has no nutritional value to them and merely fills their stomachs, stopping them taking in other, more nutritious food. Milk can ruin their digestion if ingested for long enough. The best thing for most nestlings/injured fledgelings is, believe it or not, minced up Cat Food. It's close enough to what they receive in the wild to be accepted by their digestive systems.

If this bird has a broken leg then it's quite possibly recoverable, especially if it's a fledgeling, rather than a nestling. The RSPB won't be interested, but there's plenty of animal sanctuaries that will. I'd have a look in your local directories just to see.

Got up this morning and it was making some racket. Still alive btu still in pain. Took it to the PDSA this morning but was too early and had to go to work so some lady waiting outside with her dog took it in for us :) Yeah bugger off I'm soft but I'd like to give it a chance :)

I have given a few wild animals to my local vets, pigeons, baby rabbits etc
They have contacts for people who look after injured animals and they take them away to care for them.
I couldn't leave an injured animal in a bush it would eat at me all day knowing it was in there.

Out of sight out of mind ;)
I thought they would get used for experimentation by the junior vets. KFC wouldn't use anything as high grade as a wild bird far too much meat on them :D

Yeah he's a big soft lad really (although the local winged lot round my way don't agree!). Here's a bigger picture of "killer" for her then :)

Agreed it is a very nice dog you have there mate, I want to get one but Sarah although she likes them does not want to have one in the house. Even though I assure her it will be brought up to be a big softy.

German Shepherds (Alsatian) and Rottweilers are my 2 favorites breeds.

Those are my two favs too. But I have to admit I don't fully trust any Breed of Dog softie or not.

Rottweilers have a bad name because of bad owners. Samson is a great cure for being scared of dogs. The misses' mate couldn't even be in the same room as any dog without bursting into tears... last time she was over she was on the floor cuddling Samson :) Yes you need to be strict early on but they pay you back for it big time. People do judge you for being a rotty owner tho which is sad :(

No it's not your Breed or your Dog as such I meant Hun. When I was a youngster we always had Alsatians and I loved them both to bits. I just don't trust Dogs 100% not even a tiny Handbag warmer. LOL.

Wile brings his Doberman to our meets and he is a lovely Dog but I don't trust him, it's just me mate.
