pitching an idea for a programme for TV

Strange one but does anybody know how you go about pitching an idea for a show to the various tv companies or studios ?

might also be worth speaking with independent television producers and going in with them as they have the know how and infrastructure to bring your idea to life, of course it would mean equity partnership for them but may pay in the long run on the return.

I know you probably wont want to tell us what the idea is but is it a documentry, film, reality show etc?

I can't do it myself so i need a tv company to pay for it for me :D
