View Full Version : Golf clubs
Im after a set of golf clubs, the full set, with a bag. Looking to spend up to £250 on the right set, but i don't really know what the good makes etc are.
I don't need a beginners set as such as i can hit the ball pretty well, and am fairly accurate. Am after a set which will keep me going for a while until i become pro in a year or two ;)
Can anyone recommend any? I've been looking at ebay, and there is a few sets that take my fancy, hippo, wilsons etc, but not too sure which is the best?
Go for a second hand set of callaway/titleist or taylor made. Best advice i can give really, much better spending your money on a second hand set of those than a new set of hippo.
i agree with Ray, second had is the way... think how many people start then give up goldf there are load on E-bay in the papers. go to a club house test some clubs then go out and get a 2nd had pair :)
i would 100% recommend some Callaway X14 Pro series irons......
I've ben playing with Callaway for about 10 years and can't recommend enough.
They are not the cheapest, but are in my opinion the best alround for mid to low handicapper

I have these custom fit on extra stiff pro shafts, fantastic irons

Following quite a few recommendations from friends and colleagues, I went for 2nd hand Mizunos and got some mint MX15s for £100 delivered from Ebay.
By all accounts, they're very good..I wouldn't take my word for it as I'm a proper beginner and properly cr@p! But it gives you an idea of what sort of quality and condition you can get for the money ;)

I was using (semi foolishly :) ) some maxfli australian blades and these callaways are so much more forgiving but feel almost exactly the same as hitting a perfect blade shot, i love them too and they are relatively cheap 2nd hand, will probably end up keeping them til the grooves wear out :)
You should go for second hand callaway, taylor made,Ping or mizuno. cavity backs not blades.
I've had a set of Ping I 3's for about 5 years and they've been really good.
I just bought some Callaway x 18 irons and they're amazing , best irons i've ever used infact . I've used quite a few sets over the years and the only others i would recomend to someone are titlesit DTR's although these are aimed at slightly higher handicapped players .

it just so happens , ive got the lot here , no crap either , as im unlikely to ever play again due to my spine injury .pm me for details.
just noticed your in wales as well
mizuno all the way for me. MX15's are an absolute steal for the money, but the callaways are excellent too.

snap! never been a fan of callaway, except the woods. Depends also on how much you want out of the game. My first set I bought were a set of Taylor Made blades. An absolute nightmare to hit but when I did I learnt so oo much about golf. I reduced my handicap down to 7 by the time I was 14. I then switched to a set of mizuno TPZ's and got down to scratch by the time I was 15.
I found due to the unforgiving nature of blades it forced me to look at my play as I couldnt rely on the clubs being forgiving... I had to hit it straight! when I shifted to cavity backs I was able to relax my style an awful lot but due to the level I got to with blades meant I could concentrate on other areas of my game.
Havent played for years tho due to my job but all that is going to change.....

thats impressive
im using mp33's at the moment. even tho they are blades i still find them quite forgiving. Im playing off 12 at the moment but hope to get it down a bit during the summer

its not bad. :p
I was going to do it pro but financially I couldn't. £1k a year in fees for a 15 year old wasnt going to happen! :D
I then discovered beer, women and cars and it all went to pot.:(
Thanks for all the advice and idea's  Helped a lot with my choices.
So far ive bought 3-Pw Mizuno Mp32 irons, a mituzo bag, and a taylormade r7 9.5' driver. All off ebay, second hand in A1 condition, and at pretty good prices. Not invested in a putter yet, but thats next on the cards, my mate is going to borrow me one for now :)
good choices there

no contest.......... Ping all the way. Sit perfect and nicely weighted. my personal choice has been the Ping anser2. Its an old one but never let me down!
as well as the driver get a 3 wood aswell. Mine are both callaway warbirds, stiff graphite shafts rather than regular. I can actually hit my 3 wood further than the driver. not only that but a 3 wood is easier to hit off the deck on those long par 5's!
That r7 is nice , my Dad use's one(super quad) and has nothing bad to say about it .
Ping putters are as creative says about as good as you can get , i had a ping B60 that was lovely and only swapped it as i got a scotty cameron for my xmas .
I went to an American Golf Discount store and tried a whole heap of putters including Ping, Bettinardi / Mizuno and Oddessey and for me the Oddessey White Hot XG Marksman Blade was the best - nice shape with really good weighting that promotes a nice smooth putting action. It cost £109....
Putters are very much a personal thing, you really need to try before you buy and see which feels nicest to use to you.
My sticks and bag arrived today :) Been for a quick blast and they are great, made up with them!!:D
The driver doesn't half make the ball fly, not always in the right direction though ;)
Still on the look out for a putter, some good advice again  Heard good things about oddessey, and ping, so i think im going to have to pop down the old golf shop and give them a test drive .
Pic of my clubs, they are like new..
 excellent choice with the blades  you wont regret getting them.
I may have my oddesey 2 ball if for sale if you fancy it? its an amazing putter but ive just bought a scotty cameron.
same as the one here..
