View Full Version : New Bunny - Looking to buy supra 3.0 nonturbo 93 - 99reg
Greetings club Supra ;)
My name is Rachel (otherwise known as bunny) and I'm seriously in the market for a lovely looking / condition non turbo supra (93 - 99), I have already visited a few cars from auto trader, but my expert jap car enthusiast / mechanic who was with me advised me against the ones I've seen so far - as their bodywork has been rather lacking for the price (about £3000 - £3500 is my budget).
I have learnt from joining the Suzuki owners club when I bought my GSXR, that the best deals and advice you could possibly wish for are from a club.
So does anyone have any advice of where to look or know any sellers who could help me?
I'd prefer manual, but will settle with auto and I have narrowed down colours to either silver or black (am a bit of a picky bunny)
I am also considering going to Jap fest this saturday to hunt for sellers - so I would welcome peoples advice as I am a Supra virgin and I don't want to make a mistake on my first ;)
Thanks for reading and don't be a stranger! xx

:welcome:
Have a look through the classified section on here. There is also a "What to look for guide (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/forumdisplay.php?f=60)" too.
Hey Rachel welcome to the club :hi:
good luck with the search :)
For 3k you will get a dodgy manual or an ok auto. To be honest i would keep saving so that you get a really nice one.
In most instances you get what you pay for.
Welcome :)
ive just paid £5500 for my n/a auto but she is mint and just had a full repaint inc 19"s and other various bits n bobs so i would keep saving and get a decent one or you will be chasing to keep it on the road
welcome to the nut house

Welcome Rachel... :d
Honestly though 2 years ago, i paid £6500 for my n/a and that had 48k on the clock.
In December last year, i recently bought my TT for £12000 with 82k on the clock.
You may be hardpushed to find a decent model on that budget...
Is mileage an issue??
Welcome to the club! As others have said, browse the For Sale section on here. You're more likely to get a car that's been looked after, and if it's from a long-standing member the history of it should be well documented.
PS still got the GSXR?
http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=150098 ?
Significantly over your budget though :(
http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=150099 -but couldn't find a price tho'

In budget, silver.
I'm not specifically recommending any of these cars, these are just what I found from a quick trawl of the classifieds. :)
Hello, come to japfest i'm sure you will get a better idea talking face to face with people.
p.s. pics of bike?
welcome big ears good luck in your search;)

hi and welcome.
Good luck with the hunt.
Of course I still have the bike :) As for pictures (assuming I've got the attachment thingy working properly - this is my boy - more carbon fibre than anything else ;) 75339And this is me after working as a 'bike girl' at the NEC bike show a few years back.

There have been a fair few non turbo supras on autotrader for around the £3k mark, they have been mechanically sound (after thorough checks) and I just missed out on one that was fairly new and hardly driven with only 30k miles - so they do seem to be around occasionally. But I can see the temptation of holding on a little longer and spending a few thousand more and investing in something really special. It's the dream car I've always wanted and I'm just concerned about someone trying to sell me a dead donkey :(
Really appreciate the welcome from everyone - may well have to invest in the paid version of membership here, as I thought I'd pop on here for a nose around to see what it was like first. xxxx

welcome bunny, Im new here too!! :D
I recently bought a 1998 non-turbo auto for £5400 which is in Mint Condition and no mods :). So, if it was me then i would save more money and go for the good one.
You can also look on ebay and autortrader.co.uk, pistonheads.co.uk, if ya lucky u'll get very good deal on ebay.
Good luck!!
Cheers, Arvind
P.S you said ur picky bunny but trust me GunMetal colour is also very good, the GunMetal colour came second in the voting on here.

Hmm after an NA eh so the bike will be your speed fix then :d
Good luck with the search but I'd recommend continually circling the classified section on here, and be ready to pounce on a bargain although the return of good weather may delay this possibilty :)
To further the advice then, what would people advise as the ideal budget price - if you were looking for basically a well cared for and very good cosmetic condition , non turbo supra (my gixxer is more than enough for my speed demon urges!) with less than 100k on the clock and a few of the nice supra extras (non performance) to add a cherry on the cake? Would an average of £5k - £6k be more realistic?
I'm not looking for brand new / super car / silly mods kind of thing. Just one that looks great /tidy, that I can apply some nice cosmetic mods to, but doesn't have a twin turbo titan brewing under the hood.
I managed to find this place on facebook too :) I'm feeling at home here already! Cheers for all the response peeps - really appreciate the advise :) xxx
Another thing.. I'm worried I'm either going to sound like a muppet or am missing an inside joke, but does someone care to explain 'hovis' to me ;) Or is it better not to know...

When a new member joins that is potentially a women, there is a some sad individuals that ask for a picture, the Hovis side of things is to prove the picture is for real, as the chances of googling a picture with a pretty lady (that looks real and not from a photshoot or photoshopped) and a loaf of bread is slim.

I'd say £4.5k would be ideal, this for an example click me* (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=150098)

Hi and welcome
You have come to the Supra market place at just the right time to buy I would say, you will get a nice stockish Auto NA for 3K and a very nice NA with some mods for 4K, I would pay no more than that IMO
When a new member joins that is potentially a women, there is a some sad individuals that ask for a picture, the Hovis side of things is to prove the picture is for real, as the chances of googling a picture with a pretty lady (that looks real and not from a photshoot or photoshopped) and a loaf of bread is slim.
Indeed.
It's a validation thing, in the past forums have received posts from dreamers / general trolls who pretend to have something they don't. Like a Ferrari or a nice piece of cake. In order to prove they are who they say or have what they say they do people sometimes request that they post a picture of themselves with it but also include something random, like a loaf of bread. A photographic combo that they couldn't just find on a search of the Internet.
Sadly this validation method was adopted and twisted by some rather childish people on here and became an automatic reply to any female poster daft enough to join. Cries of "hovis" could be heard as the pathetic children attempted to collect photos of women rather than simply allowing them to exist as general members on the forum without being hassled by testosterone-fuelled boys.
Luckily the "Hovis" thing was outlawed here by the chap who started the forum so it shouldn't be an issue anymore.
Welcome aboard...
Have a look around, and don't be afraid to ask questions (but do a quick search first :)), most of the inhabitants are friendly :)
Luckily the "Hovis" thing was outlawed here by the chap who started the forum so it shouldn't be an issue anymore.
and yet people still seem to bring it back up
and not the ones that used to shout it in the first place might i add, more the ones that used to shout against it
i totaly agree though, the whole hovis thing did get way out of hand. but lets just drop it huh?
Hi Bunny, welcome to the club.Where in oxfordshire are you based?

my point exactly.
Whoopsie - I think you were right with the comment 'better off not knowing' Hiten. I apoligise for making the query, but I was trying my hardest to understand how hovis bread had anything to do with pictures of my gixxer etc and I couldn't resist finding out if it was me being stupid or not ;) Fully understand now - will not say anything about bread again - fear not :)
Hey Supra61 *Wave* I'm in Wallingford - 5-10 mins from didcot if you've never heard of the place, or if you're a bike man, not far from fox's diner / biggest bike club meet place on the berinsfield roundabout.
(Wallingford is a bit of a antique old person town in the middle of the sticks!)
Believe me I am considering the offer - as I've got friends going up anyway along with the Mitsubishi gang (he's a GTO man) and it does look like a cool way to spend saturday (I've only ever been to superbike events before - this would be my first car one!)
But I would feel like a bit of a gatecrasher as I would probably be refused entry if I went up in my current car ;) But if you're a local supra man in the know - then you could definitely be a good friend to have! My GTO expert has been coming with me when I view potential supra buys, but as he keeps saying - he doesn't have any experience with supras.
I shall continue to mull over your tag along offer and see if I can make up my mind on what to do :) xx
another thing - how do you do the tidy 'thumbnail attachment' strip at the bottom of your post. I just did the paperclip attachment option when I put my pics on and they do kinda pants up the layout don't they :( Sorry, am a graphic designer and bad layouts bug me (can't turn my head off it seems...)

Did you do it using [img] links? I'm not sure, as you may need to be a paid up member, but when i post pics i use the "manage attachments" button just below the "reply to thread" window.
HTH :)
keep posting pictures we'll tell you when you get it right...:D
Ahh, just sussed out what you did. Don't use the paperclip. Below where you type in your text for the thread there is an "additional options" area. Use the "manage attachments" to keep them neat.
Not sure if you need to be a member though :)

Hey Bunny i know Wallingford quite nice down by the river.I also know Foxys diner by the scrappy oppersite the reservation(Berinsfield)Never been to a bike meet there but here its a lot of fun.
You should definately tag along to Japfest, just getting to see all those Supras in convoy to the show is going to be an experience and a half. Then when we get there over 100 Supe's on the stand.
You will get to see every colour and bodykit combo available;)

YES SIR!! :salute:
Looks like the pics worked :) Cheers for helping me figure it out - the first attempt looked shamefully rubbish.
Amusing you should mention the river in Wallingford, as I live almost next to it and row on it too :) Longest stretch for rowing in nearly the whole of the south, which is why we get the best of the best rowers all coming here wanting to row on it.
I will seriously consider Japfest - I expect my biggest risk will be shelling out on a divine supra I would normally decide I couldn't afford but can't walk away from :) It does sound awesome, so many of my favourite cars all together! Would be a first time in my life experience.

Well I do really appreciate everyones response and advice, I am almost completely confident that if I join up here I will be pretty safe from buying a donkey when I'm looking around. That black beauty for just under £5k on the classifieds would be ideal - looks like I have some more money to save up first tho :( I am very much a black and silver bunny, which the bike makes kinda obvious heh ;)
As soon as I find my wallet, I shall sign up properly and keep a very close eye on the classifieds here - while madly trying to save another thousand or so!
You guys rock. xxx

Could be a lady though :innocent::sly: :D
Don't think I'm well behaved enough to be called a lady ;)
Oxfordshire supra peeps from here could well become my new gold dust - as I think my GTO mate is getting a little tired of being dragged around supras, especially when in his opinion they're a girls car - which luckily suits me to the ground :)
Will probably be a few months before I can save up even more cash - but if there is another really promising one to check out, I shall call on here and see if any experts here fancy a supra trip. It would be a huge help! xx
Don't think I'm well behaved enough to be called a lady ;)
Awesome :D
I'd only usually buy a supra from someone on this forum these days, some proper dogs turn up on the 'trader etc. Can trace a bit of the history of the car on here at least. Even if the car's from wider afar etc, sometimes member on here local to where the car is offer to look it over to save wasted trips etc :)
If you want to be really safe, you could ask someone like Jurgen to keep an eye out for any good NAs that come his way in this country.

Bunny, have you considered RSP (royal sapphire pearl) as a colour? Probably my favourite colour of supe.
Show me a pic of one and I'll let you know ;) I consider most things, but for colour it would have to look pretty outstanding to beat my obsession with black :)

I will admit it's a pretty spanking colour - but still doesn't beat an nice shiney metallic jet black :) especially if you've got some styley stainless alloys that really get to show up nicely. What's really mad is I've already been window shopping the last month or so for replacement bits before I've even got the car - just hope my patience will last for saving up more and finding the perfect motor and not letting my heart get the better of me!

Nah,
Black - RSP - MSB - Gunmetal
In that order for me. If i was respraying a car it would always be either black or a similar blue to RSP.
You have chosen the best colour Rach, only problem is keeping it clean. Black is by FAR the worst colour to look after IMO :(
the best colour is Pink !
Silver, Its the fastest colour too. Really rare to see a silver one :innocent: Especially two next to each other

Nice to see my topic of the best colour has such strong opinions ;)
I will admit the gunmetal is pretty sexy, and it probably makes number two on my top five list - but black is still number one :D Plus - black can't be harder to keep clean than the whitest of white (which is the colour of my current car) it's a nightmare - have to wash it every ten minutes to keep the damn thing looking white.
Nah - it's black, no contest. Looks the best on us girls too, will be my version of a little black dress ;)
On another note, Jurgen has offered to import one for me - and I would pay £3k now and another £1.5k when it would arrive in ten weeks. Does anyone have any experience of this - how would you know what you're getting before it arrives so to speak, and do imports have the right speedo dials, headlight settings etc, or do you need to arrange all that too? What if you pay your £3k and the car that arrives isn't suitable for one reason or another, or you can't get insured on it for some reason?
Sorry for all the questions - have no experience of this side of buying a car...
Jurgen won't import cr@p basically, what you see in the photo's is exactly what you will get.
EDIT: red is the fastest! does no one remember the books growing up as children?
(This is all before you hand over your £3k)
Would you get a full list of it's spec and any additional mods that may effect an insurance quote? how would HPI work for an import car, or is that completely safe if Jurgen arranges the import?
Will it be legal for driving in the UK when you buy it or do you have to pay in addition to the fee to get the dials changed over etc?
Do you get to see thorough pictures of the car that would be imported for you before you agree and pay the cash?

Best to pm jurgen but apart from the last question it will be ready for the road
Bah! Gunmetal's easily the best Rach :D
http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/1731/dscn1038px1hs5.th.jpg (http://img185.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn1038px1hs5.jpg)
Gunmetal would be the best/easiest colour to get on with day to day IMO. I've seen one clean, and also dirty, and they don't look that different, as you can easily see from that really fuzzy photo (you could've picked a better one! ;)).
My car is the original Toyota Black, and when its clean and polished, there is no better colour IMO, but once that gloss has gone (within a day or 2), it really starts to look lacklustre very quickly. I spend a lot of time trying to keep it looking good, and its worth it, but it can easily become an obsession
Oh hello and welcome by the way :)
How specific can you be when it comes to the car you want an importer to find?
colour / mileage / bodywork / cosmetic condition / mechanics / transmission / age / cosmetic mods etc?
Can you essentially write up a list of requirements and wait to see what can be found? I'm just a bit confused at how it works and wondering if anyone here has arranged an import specifically and knows how it all works form the buyers point of view...

Jurgen is a top bloke.
Can't go wrong him at the helm
I'm getting the distinct impression that I can probably have complete faith that mr Jurgen is probably a trustworthy and reliable source who won't try to sell me a dingo in a tin suit ;) I'm just trying to get a better all round idea of the importing process...
Send him a quick pm, I'm sure he'd be more than happy to help with your queries. :)
Nice to see my topic of the best colour has such strong opinions ;)
Nah - it's black, no contest. Looks the best on us girls too, will be my version of a little black dress ;)
Your so right about Black, imagine how good youd look in your little black number sat in my little black number :d
Sorry getting carried away :hello: and :welcome: good luck on your hunt for a nice supra, beware theres plenty of dogs out there.
Plus - black can't be harder to keep clean than the whitest of white (which is the colour of my current car) it's a nightmare - have to wash it every ten minutes to keep the damn thing looking white.
Trust me, white doesn't show up the dust the same way. It doesn't look as dull when its dirty but it doesn't look as shiney when its clean either.
I always thought white would be the hardest to keep clean, its definitely black. Grey is probably the easiest.
Hi and :welcome: , can't go wrong with Jurgen ;) top bloke.
Silver, Its the fastest colour too. Really rare to see a silver one :innocent: Especially two next to each other

Sorry about that. Welcome along Bunny. As you've found, plenty of help and advice around here. When you get through the banter.:)

Take a look at the new Audi Ibis White, it looks great when polished.
Take a look at the new Audi Ibis White, it looks great when polished.
Oh i'm not saying white doesn't look great when polished, I think all colours look great polished. What i meant was you can see the difference a lot more with black than you can with most other colours.
All IMO of course.

Absolutely. Cleaned mine Sunday, now it's covered in dust and still looks shiny.

Just had a look at your car buddy. I think if i had an Aerotop i would prefer white. Can't put my finger on what it is but it just seems to suit it.
As others have said, Jurgen's got a good reputation on here. Your questions are still valid though, and you should make sure you get suitable answers to them before you spank the plastic. Jurgen himself should be able to answer most if not all of those questions. I'm sure you won't be the first to have asked him.... :)
I might be wrong, and 'no offence like' but I would think Jurgen's a little more 'high end' than £3k...
spank the plastic ;) I like that phrase - made me laugh :)
I will mail him a lengthly list of questions then and try to get a better idea of the process, I just wanted to play it safe and make sure nobody on here thought they should warn me of anything or had some inside knowledge I would do well to know about ;) I am definitely positive about the jurgen importing idea though, as it should hopefully be a good way to really find my perfect motor and by the sounds of it - with much less risk than buying something on autotrader etc...
The real question would be if the perfect motor gets found and you 'spank the plastic' ;) and then how do you last ten weeks for it to arrive :D I'd be climbing the walls!
he already mailed me after I told him what I was after - he said £3k to start and then another £1.5k when it arrives - making £4.5k total...

Yeah that sounds about right. He will get you a minter too, has a great rep on here :)
Sounds pretty promising to me :) Cheers for the reassurance - and thankyou everyone for helping me find out what direction I need to go in order to find my very special supe. Jurgen sounds like a top man and very trustworthy by the sounds of what you guys have said and I am now confident that it's the right way to go.
Considering I didn't really have any idea what was best when I was wandering around auto trader supras - coming here was the best thing I ever did :)
BIG THANKYOU HUGS to everyone here! And I'm still pretty certain he's gonna be black :D

Hey Suprastar!!!!
Not everyone pays idiot money for import cars! As we import, we know how much we buy cars [-]over from japan![/-] (what does that mean?) for in Japan, [-]and how much it cost[/-](you just said that)! So call whatever you want chav talk! At the end of the day, the car importer is laughing (no 'f') at people like you!
If you go to Japan you can see how cheap you can buy these cars!
Everyone doesn't have lots of money to spend, [-]lots of[/-] some people have a low budget to buy a Supra[-]s[/-], and sometimes people get lucky buying a good car[-]s[/-] for a cheap price!
So dont [-]be[/-] (got your object/subject mixed there I think) stereotype!
Best I could do, HTH ;)

I would just like to point out mr h devil, that not only is it a fact that I do have a decent amount of money to buy the supra I want. But this thread is ultimately aimed at any members on here who feel they can advise me in the best way to spend said money on my first supra and where to get the best buy, not get scammed or a dodgy deal. Which the members have done a wonderful job of and I am very thankful for.
The appropriate phrase I think is - if you don't have anything nice or helpful to say, then it's best not to say anything.

but locking this thred as it has gone way to far im sure someone can do
From that post it looks like the writer just can't be bothered to be honest.
Shocking.
Have I missed something.. why should a thread for a new member in the new member section be locked? Is there a limit to how many people can say hello / introduce themselves or give any advice or tips about buying your first supra? I also didn't think there was call for objections against chat and introductions / getting to know the other members in your first posted thread, which believe me I'm getting a better picture by the minute in some cases :(

sorry - got the impression that another thread by me would put people out going on the comment after you suggested it originally. I don't think there are any issues here. Everyone is more than willing to answer questions, point you in the right direction and help all they can. Apart from a few pages in the middle (Ed and Hiten) this thread appears to have been fairly informative.

the idea of the thread lock was not because of you, it is due to alot of the thread going way off topic and also the fact that half of this forum if not all would hardly reply to new member threads but because you are a girl and they cant keep away
