Odd speed converter

In the process of stripping out the old car alarm from my motor I came across the KPH->MPH converter and almost threw it out as it looked like part of the alarm system. Most converters I have come across look like a box the size of a matchbox with about 3 wires coming out. This box is twice the normal size and has a switch at the end of about 2 foot of wires. Anyone come across these converters before? whats the switch for?

Yeah that was my thoughts too, but unfortunately my car looks like this at the moment so cant test it...

Tested this morning and yep it switches back to KPH.
