Only if you take out an 18 month contract, I enquired yesterday about it on lunch at the 02 shop in Leeds.

I dont think you can... I tried online, and the fine print is that you have to include an 18 month O2 contract.

Where does it go? Its a sealed unit.

On the top, between the headphone jack and on button. Search on YouTube, took me a while to find it.

YouTube is blocked at work, so I cannot look...

How does a SIM free iPhone work??? Is that not an iTouch???? :search:

Scotster
23-04-08, 12:04
Sim free means it will accept any sim and its not locked to any network.

Are the sim free hacked iphones future proof now? I know that a while back they were prone to being bricked from apple updates. Thats the main reason i didn't bother to get one in the first place. Was worried it would be a waste of cash.

i have no idea????
on my i phone the sim goes in a small space on the top, you have to poke the hole with a pin and the drawer pops out, and before anyone asks NO its not turbosim (which means you have to cut your sim in half and attach it to another or something)

Still a problem. There is no defacto way to region free an iPhone and use unmodified firmwares. You have to mod the firmware with each update.

I have an app that will unbrick the phone. I crashed my iphone, had to us iTunes for updates (as the backup failed), it bricked the phone, then the un-bricked. Nice and easy... up to version 1.1.4.

Just in case it isn't clear (which it wasn't to me) go into your o2 shop, pay via credit card and it's yours for 169.99, no need to get an o2 contract. I've just done it this week as have many other people.

10mins later and unlocked at home to all networks.

Anyone paying more than 169.99 for a 2nd hand one is off their head IMO.

i just phoned my local o2 shop and yes you can buy the phone for £169 (didnt dispute that) but then you have to contact apple to register the phone and have to take out a contract min £35 before they will activate the phone.
Unless you can get the phone activated whilst unlocking it i cant see how the phone would work

But you don't activate it through apple, you just unlock it at home and have it on any network, job done :d

i'm no expert, but doesnt all the functions of the I-Phone work through O2 yeah? so unlocking a phone would make most of the functions useless yeah?

Todd
23-04-08, 13:47
No. I got my phone ran the unlocking software, stuck my orange sim in and it picked up the network straightaway and everything works as it should.

I just use it for the wireless, not tried using it with edge yet but that's pig slow anyway.

If you want to use it for the net outside wireless then you really want to wait for the 3g.

Unlocking your iPhone is not for the feint hearted, it is possible to brick it and if you're not technically minded and understand what you're doing it's not always as straight forward as the YouTube videos have you believe. You'll also kiss goodbye to your warranty and will have broken the user license.

For instance, you have to find out your networks GPRS proxy settings, username and passwords to access that. You need to alter your answer phone number so the answer phone button works. Some of the hacking tools break other things like Wi-Fi which you can fix. You need to build yourself up a library of firmwares and boot roms etc. Basically if you put in the time to read forums, grab illegal files and aren't technically challenged you can work it out.

I'm running v2.0 with Exchange integration at the moment, it's a little buggy but works well.

Exchange integration is very good, push mail works (then occasionally stops working).
Buggy in that it will occasionally lock up and keeps stopping me from viewing the inbox on my other IMAP account.
It's not as fluid as the proper firmwares with the animations etc I think it needs some code optimisation or something. I really hope it's not pushing the CPU limits!
Other sad thing is Installer can not be installed as EVERY current iPhone app needs recompiling for v2.0 there is no opportunity to put home brew apps on it. :(
Battery life is very poor - I've just realised that might be down to v2.0 also as I didn't run it on 1.4 for long.

Apparently sometimes the hacking can affect the wifi - have a look at ziphone.org may have some pointers over there, I remember seeing something about wifi problems over the weekend.
