Tapping noise coming from front are of engine, been going on for a couple of weeks, barely noticeable at first but yesterday and today, really pronounced :(

Watched pulleys and aux belt moving at idle, no lateral movement on the pulleys that I can see. With engine off, checked for play in pulleys, nothing :search:

Aux belt changed before Christmas last year, tension seems fine. Done search on here, found nothing really.

Was wondering if bearings worn behind pulley, if thats how they move? sorry not a mechanic but......help!!!

Wont move car off drive for now, doesnt seem like a good idea.

:(

Take the belt off, start the engine for a minute or so (no more, the water pump is not turning....) If the noise goes you have isolated it to a pretty narrow band of culprits.

 Thanks Chris, will do that when I get home after some more thorough visual checks and take it from there.

Update:

Apparently its the aux belt tensioner. The numpty's who changed the belt just before christmas strong armed the tensioner and now it needs replacing :badmood:

Had to have it taken away on a flat bed Saturday and am now worse off by at least £355  Fortunately where it is now seem a good bunch, cost of pickup, diagnosis, part and fitting reasonable so should be fitted and ready for picking up tomorrow or Wednesday.
