View Full Version : Car feels sketchy
At high speed when braking it feels like the car is very light at the front and tries to pull me all over the road, i have a UK TT AUTO would new suspension and a strut bar help this, or are new bigger brakes required.
Cheers

What tyres are you running and have you checked the pressures lately?
all at 36 psi, rear tyres are brand new, front have a little wear on in-side but are uniroyal and have plenty of tread left on em. Rear tyres are Kumo i think, got em for 100 each - after my 350 pound service had to go budget.
Hmm, maybe the trackingh is out?
Or, you could instead get a full suspension geometry check, but these are quite expensive i think.
ah the infamous tracking problem, it cost like 30 to get tracking done and normally unnecessary. What suspension would you recommend for the Supra the UK susp needs to be replaced as the jap ones i drove felt better.

I think Stu changed his suspension to Jap before he sold to Keith so he shoud be able to give you a comparasion. But it might be the front tyres are not up to the job.
Whats the best front tyre i can get, and where can i get a pair for a decent price, none of this 220 per tyre price. Think the Michelins came out at 180 each!
A few guys on the BBS run with Whiteline suspension, I am sure one of them will tell you wheater they recommend it or not.
BTW, how many miles has your car got on it? It must be quite alot for the suspension to be on it's way out. The j-spec will feel firmer as the UK-spec has softer shocks anyway. :)
If you look at my recent custom suspension thread I came to the conclusion that for the money the Whiteline kit can't be beaten.
How much Alex and where from pls.

Good tires cost money, dont buy cheap ones and expect there to be no grip/handling price to pay. The best out there are the S0-2s and they would be about 250 for the front.
Whiteline suspension is just under 1k i think. Very good value for money :)

Check the Custom Suspension Thread as Rich (HardHead) listed all the parts - Antiroll bars, Bushes, dampers and springs etc.....

sounds to me like it could b one of alot of other things b4 new suspension. the susp bushes may b worn or damaged. the wheel size and offset could be way out. have u checked for loose connections in the susp? yr brakes could b defective or abs is not fuctioning correctly. im just stabbing in the dark here, not seen nor driven yr car, nor am i an expert.
explain the problem in more detail. what wheels do u have? hows the ride when not braking? excessive tramlining? does it happen under hard braking or light braking? does it happen on new smooth roads? any noises? how r the tyres wearing?

60k out of my shocks before they started too leak.
I went for the Whiteline stuff, Koni adjustable shocks and springs, no need for anti roll bars in my opinion and only £630.00 inc shipping, vat and import duties. Bear in mind that there are full 4 wheel alignment charges (£105.00) and fitting charges on top.
I have standard 17" UK spec, front tyres are wearing on the inside excessively, Ride feels fine when driving and accelerating, It just had a service at Toyota and a full MOT would these eradicate any problems? When braking hard at 90+ it just doesn't like it, pulling me left + right. The disks + pads r fine but as i said the tyres on the front are wearing on the inside heavily ( Tracking problem?). so a full tracking job tomorrow and c what happens, i dont think it will sort it out - but i found out from a friend that he can get Porsche Brake modded for the supra... u think this would be good?
Cheers

I dont think many brakes come close to the UK-spec ones performance-wise. They are almost 100% not the problem. Also remember the Porcshe is lighter, so probably would not need as good brakes as the UK Supra.
Syed where i Bucks are you? Do you ever meet up or see anyother supras, i never ever see any, apart from mkiii. I haven't seen one in 4 months!

For 30 quid it's well worth getting the tracking checked (and the rest of the geometry as well). It sounds like you have too much toe-in which would make the car very nervous under braking.
A caliper could have a problem...could be worth investing in the renewal kit Doughie mentioned a while ago.
Could it be the tarmac? Stoopid as it sounds maybe with the recent heatwave the tarmac changed slightly?
Take it to a garage (not necessarily Toyota) and get it checked out they may find the bushes are knackered as Eyefi mentioned.
My guess is that your shocks are leaking. Get them checked out.
Wear on the inside edge of tyres on a Supra is quite normal, you can dial this out but it tends to be at the expense of handling.
I was doing 120 on the dual carriage way and decided i would brake early for the roundabout, holy ***** my heart rate rose 500% as the car twitched on braking and i had to fight to keep control. Hope the tracking sorts it out.
Thx for help guys :p

Porsche brakes rule...end of!
If they are a 4pot + with a rotor more than 320mm in dia then they are worth investigating.
Can you get those nice ceramic ones off the turbo? :D
I have a friend who works for Pro-Drive also a friend who works for a Corvette company, and they convert Porsche brakes, he said he would sort me out some cheap ones, i'll find out and send u a price ( cost of course ) :)

Hmm, I was only going on what I have heard (mainly from the US admittidly). Are they better than the brembos/APs?
I live just outside Banbury and i never see one! Even going to Oxford and i still dont see one - i suppose thats why every one stares as if they've never seen one before:)

Think you'll find they ARE Brembo's :)
Well, in that case, they would only be equal to/only slightly better that the UK 4-pots :p
So not exactly an 'upgrade'.
Adam, I know, even though there are so many Supras near me, I hardly ever see one, although I did see Gareth the other day. :)
How old are you guys? Do u meet up often......
Well, there is usually an MK meet a couple of times a year.
As for ages, we're all old gits 'cept for Gareth.

Yeah but Gareth still looks like one!!! :sly:
Sorry couldn't resist!!! :D
Syed have you removed both cats? is there a much noticable difference in power.... acceleration or mid range? Sorry to keep pestering you but my sup is Stock and i wanna spend my money wisely as i have little left :( ( at the moment )
Take the cats out, and not much differance :(
Take out the cats and put on a decent exhaust and
Probably about the most cost-efficient mod there is, after this, the car feels MUCH quicker, and the turbos spool faster as well :)
Go for it
Sod it its going on plastic and i hope i sell my other car quickly!!!
Cant wait to hear the raw of the Blitz Nur-Spec exhaust
the supra 4 pots r one of the best performing brake setups around. they even out perform the brembo 6pot 320mm. ive seen some figures somewhere ill try and find them (found them). i doubt that u can get better brakes for yr supra esp for reasonable money. have a look:-
Porsche Twin Turbo GT1 brakes (the best on ANY road car in the world produce 2060 Braking Horsepower.
The Jap-spec Supra TT produce 1010 Braking Horsepower.
The UK spec Supra TT 4 pots produce 1665 Braking Horsepower. (With the Mintex elliptic grooved discs 1760!)
Standard Porsche 996 C2/C4 1590 Braking Horsepower
Ferrari 456GT, 1480 BR/hp
Lamborghini Muira (1966), 780BR/hp ?!?!?!
Mercedes Brabus V12, 1950 BR/hp
Maclaren F1 1670BR/hp
Ferrari F1.....7000+ hot, 700, when cold!
2ltr Ford Mondeo Saloon 700 BR/hp
More, Brembo/AP 6 pot system, to any car
320mm discs (same as my supra brakes) 1590 BR/hp
355mm discs 1680 BR/hp
385mm discs 2040 BR/hp
Wilwood Rallystop (4pot) for the first 2 above sizes
1640 BR/hp
1750 BR/hp

anyway i dont think at all that the brakes u have need replacing at all. they could do with a good check over. sounds like geometry to me, too much toe out causes feathering wear on the inside of the front tyres. and when braking at high speed will cause the toe out to increase more so. again only guessing and not an expert.
What do u mean by to much toe out buddy?
toe-out will give a good platform under braking, but if you have too much toe-in the car will feel like it is on tip-toes, and will also wear the insides of the tyres.
How do i get toe out and not toe in? What is it???? :)
To toe out, the front leading side of your front tires point ever so slightly away from the car, and so its kind of splayed.
Toe-in is the reverse....amazingly enough
Ah now i c, so adjusting the tracking rods to give toe out instead of toe in. That clears it up.
Thx.

look at the front wheels from above the car (going straight). now imagine measuring between the inside of the left tyre to the inside of the right tyre at the very front of the tyre and do the same for the very back of the tyre. toe in is when the front of the tyres are closer together. toe out is when the rear of the tyres r closer and the fronts further apart. in other words, toe in is when both the tyres r pointing in. toe out is when both the tyres r pointing out. these r set to very small amounts and if u actually measured it with a tape measure would not notice any difference.
**edit: too late as explained above**
Thx for letting me pick ur brains guys, hopefully i can recify my dodgy breaking situation with a vist to Kwik Fit tomorrow morning.
have a look at this: http://www.fernblatt.com/longhurst/tyre_bible.html

Oh, it was all quite interesting up until that moment :( Now I don't believe a bit of it.
MkIV UK spec brakes are the best brakes I've ever experienced in anything. Everyone who's had a go in my Supra agrees :) And people who have been following me might agree they are good as well...
-Ian
Next time you'll think about who's following before slamming on the anchors at 130+ with a shite j-spec in tow!!!! :D :music:
130+ i take it you mean KMPH

Errrrrmmmmm.............................of course officer

Noooooooooooooooo, dont get one of them, get a Hiper
Remeber, that eirther mod on it's own will not give much power, for best effect, get it decatted as well.
Get a hyper eh...... give us details pls so i can see what they look like

I know good isn't it.
Look out for them on other forums, right click and check out properties.
Adam, check out the members register for some pics, and somewhere on the site is an MPEG of how it sounds
Louder than a Nur-spec anyday!
Martins just jealous ;)
