Instead of lumping the pros of this forum under one umbrella could we seperate the box shifters from the traders who actually pick up a spanner please.

I keep forgetting about that forum. I'll ask for the thread to be moved :)

Moved.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Yea but some of the "tuners" are box shifters aswell, would they go in both sections? maybe get them to put a sticky in there section saying what services they offer would be better:)

I think it's a good idea TBH. Maybe have different criteria for a Trader or a Tuner with Trader being the easier of the 2 titles to get.

This will also factor in people who have gained knowledge themselves and worked on cars as a hobby (both theirs and others) because IMO they are the people who have the right experience.

Not sure how you would quantify what makes someone a Tuner though?

Perhaps someone who works on cars in their own premises or is hands on (to take into account RyanG etc)

Don't most of the traders have a "Hi, this is who we are" thread that pretty much covers that?

Cant see that it makes much difference - traders who undertake servicing work advertise it - those who don't, don't.

Implications are that you subdivide things so much it becomes impossible to trawl around a site (check some of the other forums out to see what I mean!)

I don't see how.

I'm just asking for greater transparency.

I dont see it as necessary TBH.

There are enough sections already.

I don't see there has to be any more sections, just some sort of label to denote the reliable people to listen to.

Or I could be missing the point completely :)

I think it's fine as it is TBH - splitting it will just introduce "grey areas" as mentioned if a particular person/company offer both labour and products.

I wasn't asking for any more sub-sections or sub forums or whatever, but I am asking for asking for more clarity between the 20 year old kids with a distribution deal from the states who could sell ice to an Eskimo on their laptops in their bedrooms from the bona fide tuners who will have the knowledge and experience of tuning and working on our cars.

Might be a crap idea but instead of different sections for traders and tuners, which as already said might not work due to some being both, why not colour code the name of the company. (eg: Traders = purple, Tuners = Turquoise, Both = Another colour).
The Key for the colours could be put in the "Authorised Traders" Title of the main forum page, that way everyone could see at a glance which trader does what by the colour of their name.

Who me? Nope, I'm happy with the place I get my parts and labour, used the same place for about 5 years.

Regarding the "both" option, I'd just leave them as Authorised Tuners

Might it be possible to have a split feedback rating, e.g. add a 'tuning/mechanical feedback' rating to the existing 'sales feedback' rating below avatars? This way we'd be able to easily see if a trader's better known and qualified in either (or both) areas.
I imagine it might be difficult to divvy up the feedback already gained though.

There is a huge difference between tuners, mechanics and box shifters if we are to be totally accurate. This is not intended as a slight on anyone, but many owners do not have the skills to assess if a tuner or mechanic is any good or not. We all remember the flavour of the month outfits, that to be honest should never have been allowed to trade. Yet they got a big following and very positive feed back and could do no wrong until the cracks started to appear. Unfortunately this was too late for members who had spent thousands to have their cars damaged.

If there was to be any classification it should be down to mods who would have an unbiased view with all members interests at heart.

Like your choice of colours:limp:

Sounds like a good idea though:)

We are all adults, i think you need to do your own research before you purchase any eqpt or use a particular tuner etc. Dont see how having this catagorised on the forum will make any difference.

For example I could use a particular tuner that the forum have gave Tuner status to, on their recommendation I use them and 3 months later my car falls apart. Who is to blame, the tuner for being crap, the forum for recommending them or me?

Traders are Traders - simple as that, do your research folks and think carefully who gets your thousands!

I can't see the point in this at all.

What are you hoping to achieve by this? Some kind of guarantee of capability? Not going to happen. That comes from long standing reputation.

It simply wont work, too confusing. People go on recommendations anyway so having traders grouped in to sections wont make a difference.
