Hiya Everyone,

Im new, I just joined and I'd like to waffle a few words.

Yes, I drive the car in my sig, or did do until it threw a rod, anyway. I REALLY fancy a Supra, a big step up I know from my RST, but I think they are lovely, to look at anyway.

I was wondering if you guys could tell me a bit a bout them with regards to tuning, insurance and parts if ya don't mind? Im only 22 and I reckon the insurance will be a killer. Tesco just quoted me £2k... ouch.

Any info you can give would be great.

CheeRS :D

Hi Tony,

A few pointers

J-Specs usually cost more than Uk specs to insure... elephant are quite good on the quotes for a stock car.. a lot of companies dont bother fully covering mods, and will just replace with stock parts.

Of course there are those that will. Best to do some shopping around.

Welcome to the board!

Always had a soft spot for the old RST's, a mate of mine was heavily into fords and I get dragged along to the RS owners days every year  (usually some fun to be had on the way there and back :innocent: ).

How many years no claims? any points etc.? I think you'll probably be looking at £1500 but maybe lower on a UK spec, they're slower so less chance of you writing it off (well I had to get that in before someone else did :innocent: ).

Oh and on a J-Spec ~£1000 get's you 400bhp :D (just one of the many reasons to get one)

Hmmmmmmm thanx for the info guys.

Whats J Spec? Jap Import???

I like modding so Im not really interested in keeping it std, but obviously like you said Thorin, I dont wanna smash it up. Im 22 with 3 yrs NCB and a squeaky clean record. Just not been caught yet lol.

400hp sounds GOOD :D

What is the stats for a UK TT then? I seen on AutoTrader that there isn't alot of manual cars about, whys that, as I would prefer a manual?

Oh, and whats wrong with my sig? :stupid:

Thanx guys.

Yup J-Spec is jap import.

As I said I reckon you'd be looking at £1500 on a j-spec (foreign import owners get shafted on that front). Maybe less on a UK.

400bhp does sound good, with a full decat and HKS Hiper exhaust it sounds VERY good :D

There's no difference in 0-60 / quarter mile times between UK or J-Spec but the J-Spec's have faster spooling ceramic turbo's where as the UK's have steel bladed ones that are slower spooling but produce slightly more power, hence performance times practically the same. UK manuals are getting like rocking horse poo now, still plenty of Jap ones to be had though. Don't write off the idea of getting an auto before you've driven one though, the Supra auto box is not like most ordinary auto boxes and is actually very good (quite a few people end up prefering them and they are much easier to launch and get good times on).

alright tony mate, been doing my homework on these too.

You can get a 3l twin turbo auto for around 8k.

Pretty good cars really, saw one in the flesh on holiday, far better than our bean tins. I'm very serious about getting one, once mine is run in and mapped I might be thinking about selling for a supra.

All these ford boys seeing the light hey ? :p

Test drive both of them before you make a decision, even j-spec 6 speeders are quite rare and to get a decent one takes time - took me 6 month to find mine

Always good to have auction grade information - this is the bible when it comes to purchasing direct from japan - it gives you accurate rundown of ,bodywork, interior milage etc....IMO full service history is a must and if you get one from Japan from a decent importer then it should have that stuff 9mine did

Have a look at this thread - it gives you more details on auction grades and stuff.

Get down to one of the meets and have a chat to some owners and so they can share some experiences.Have a look around the cars etc...

oh yeah Welcome to the board mate BTW

Good afternoon guys,

Thank alot for your advice it has certainly got me thinking about it today. Where is the best place to get an Import insured as I heard that u get stung for an Import, and are they all restricted?

I have a mate in the trade so getting hold of a decent Supra shouldn't be tooooo hard if I wave £12k under his nose. Is this GOOD Supra money? What is needed for a "stg1" then, is it just a bigger cooler and more boost, or a chip and injectors, or all 4?

I just dont like Automatics, how a car can drive itself is frankly wrong and it freaks me out, plus I feel there is more control over the gears with a manual. IMO. Also, how I can I donut if the car keeps wanting to change up a gear ;)

Big Benn - If I am getting a Supra, OR a Skyline the RST will have to wait, or I may just stick another std engine in it and run it back to the power it was before.

Jon - I aint seen no mk4 Supras for £8k?! Where u been looking, down the Erith Marshes? PMSL All the ones I seen have been around £12k- £14k, but more are autos.

12K should buy you a lowish milage 6 speed manual grade 4+

Imports are restricted but when you get them converted any good importer should be derestricting these as part of the process very easy procedure.

As for modding - most people start with decatting almost all the jap cars I saw when buying where already Zorsted up and aftermarket airfiltered - and upping the boost a tad to start with, makes a big difference in performance -after that people tend to tune tailored to there needs and preferences there are so many different options.

OH yeah - "RLTC" too - arguably the best mod you can get for your supra ! Gets the power down and keeps ure P&J on the road

PMSL!

I live near Dartford m8, anywhere near you?

Just a guess, but RLTC, would that be Race Logic Traction Control?

I have been thinking about a Supra ALOT today, and I do want one, but I am looking at 12k for starters. I think I may have to finish my RST first. Still, where there is a will...

Hello guys!:)

8k for a TT sounds very cheap and to be honest I woudln't go near it.

Tesco are good for import insurance so well worth giving them a call.

I also swore never to have an Auto but have one now because the Supra box is so superior to any other that I have driven. You have lots of different modes it can run in that enable you to do donuts as well as hold the car through the rev range in any gear.;)

As thorin quite rightly said, they are much quicker off the line in a trach day and the J-specs will give you easy and cheap(ish) power.

For 12k you should get a tidy example, I wouldn't consider paying anything less than about 10k though.

Welcome to the board:cool:

Tony, i don't think all the sub £10K cars should necessarily be avoided. There's sometimes wealthy supra owners selling unmodified cars at approx 'Parkers guide' type prices just to get rid of it. Also IMO there are some cars at 12-13K that are probably no better but just 'owe' the seller more.

Welcome to the board Tony.

I live in Greenhithe so not too far away at all..

As for insurance I spoke to a company called A-Plan the other day and they quoted me about a grand (26 4yrs NCB) with nothing extra for having large alloys and a performance exhaust. They only insure imports too. Might be worth a try for you.

Welcome,

I know that you said that you would rather have a stick shift but have you thought about the twin turbo with Tiptronic gear box? I know very little mechanical speak but I do own auto tiptronic supe and once you get used to the buttons, it really is faster especially when getting away from lights etc...LOL! IMO>

Tony - all the ones I've been loooking at have been auto's, for a manual your looking 12k mark, which IMO I'd probably rather an escort cossie but for 8k it's deffo worth it. These are a few currently on autotrader.

Hows things going with your RST mate anyway? You still going for a high spec rebuild? or you just going to lob a recon engine in and sell the car?

Have you read up on auto Vs Manual article on this site? Very interesting.
