View Full Version : Water Bills...??
How much do people pay?
Are you on a meter or do you pay a standard rate?
Just got my bill for this year 2008 - 2009......£566.00.....:(
We live in a 4 bed semi with 2 adults and 2 kids, we have 2 bathrooms. Personally I think this is excessive!
I would like to know what other people pay by comparison as I am thinking of going on a meter. Besides washing the car and having a big bath, we are not exactly huge water users.....
H.
Mine's about £120 pa on a meter, just me in my flat and I'm not a big user either, so yours might be accurate...
Mine in a 2 bed house is nearly 400. For a whole year though. I am tempted to put in a meter as I don't think we use that much. Knowing my luck we do use more than our fair share and it would go up!
£312 last year. Metered. 2 bed, just me and Vicki.
That's a total lie. I just looked again, it was £232.16.
wow, the most abundant liquid on the planet, and its damn pricey!!
2 people in a 2 bedroom flat, only using a shower daily, plus washing machine etc, approx. £480 pa. on a meter.
Extortionate IMO, but the house is old, and I'm sure some our water is feeding the plants in the driveway too!
Move to Scotland, no water bills there. It is included in the Council tax, and even that is not that dear compared to parts south of the border.
3 Bedroomed house, 1 bathroom, 2 adults, 2 teenagers. £336 a year, not on meter or mains drains

Our Council Tax bill is £1387 a year now.
And add to my water bill a £130 a year bill for getting the cesspit emptied :(

Water bill is ok, its the gas bill and council tax that gets me, just had a gas bill for £209 for the first month i lived here:blink: and my council tax is £223 per month:(
Yeah have to agree mate, water hardly appears on the radar but council tax is a killer !
But please don't start me off, if I get on the tax soapbox I'll be here all night

Is it like a grate/living flame type of thingy? I bet is uses a sh!t load of gas and hardly heats the room. We got nailed for £200 for our fist bill after moving into a 2 bed terraced. We never used the fire after that!!
H.
Only been in this property for a few months but already for the first quarter:
Water = £130
Electric = £150
Gas = £240
over £2k a year :(

Maybe I'll think before I complain. Our gas is £180 and Leccy £120.
The water is now getting silly, they will install a meter free and if it doesn't suit you, you can change back.....woot!!:)

9 beds, 4 bathrooms, I pay 240/year.
Private sewerage tho which helps...

lol, not at all. Property much cheaper in Wales. Plus its split in two and we rent one half out to two old ladies.

Pics!!:D
We switched to a meter last November.
So far it's working out at about £25 per month - 2 bed house with just me'n'her indoors.
Cheaper than the amount we were paying before though - that was about £36 per month.
We have just had a meter fitted and the difference is incredible. Our original bill was 45 pounds per month due to our house size and we are now looking at a reduction to 13 quid based on the two of us. Now that is a great saving.
I have now reduced my showering frequency from 2-3 times per day to only twice per week:d

If that's you in your avatar then I would be paying the £45 and showering more. Unless you don't sweat much for a fatty!!:d

I'm not saying you are wrong Paul but please triple check they will remove it if you're not happy, because around here once it's in, it's in for good!
I looked into a meter about 6 months ago as there is just me now in a three bed semi. I worked out I wouldn't be save a vast amount, not enough to risk it going in for good. What concerned me was when the time comes to sell/rent the property I think a water meter may put of some potential buyers/tennants.
Try this calculator and see what you think http://www.stwater.co.uk/server.php?show=nav.5964
Wessex Water are good. They'll remove it within the first year FOC if you change your mind.
(We've never had a hosepipe ban down here either. ;) )
"Domestic customers may choose to revert to paying on an unmetered basis. This option lapses after you have been billed for a whole year on the meter charge. However, you will have to pay for the water and sewerage services used to date. (If you decide not to be charged on a metered basis we will not normally physically remove the meter.) Reversion to unmetered charges is not permitted for commercial customers."
Edit for Burna.
I've just checked your area and from the link you pasted:
"What if it turns out not to be cheaper on a meter, can I have it taken out?"
"You can go back to unmetered bills but you must tell us within 12 months of the date the meter is fitted or within 30 days of your second bill. We do however request that the meter is left in place."
We've never had a hosepipe ban down here either. ;)
I think Hose pipe bans are bullcrap to be honest. With all the rain we get how can they say we have water shortages?
Ok I've done a bit of digging and it seems you can return to an unmeasured charge within the first 12 months if you don't like the meter charges, according to ofwat http://www.ofwat.gov.uk/aptrix/ofwat/publish.nsf/Content/infonote46
I'm going to look at metering again when I get home as it surely must be a hell of a lot cheaper for me living on my own. My original calculations were probably way off I think :innocent:

That reminds me - I have got to go shopping for 100 pies:innocent: (that's 3-days supply):D

Because they are incapable of CATCHING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Drives me insane. Messing about with watering cans all summer.

Just checked the back of my bill, it says "We fit water meters for free and if you decide during the first year that it's not right for you, you can ask us to switch you back to paying for your water based on the rateable value of your home."
Now, it does say "you can ask" they seem to have omitted the part where the tell you to f*ck off!!:D

:d Sounds about right.
I think I was confusing myself with the fact that once the meter is in they don't remove it if you change you mind, they just don't take the reading :innocent:

Yes mate! Once a meter is in, they won't remove it. I am going to get one installed just to test the theory. I know some weekends when my 13 year old stays with us, she can spend 1/2 hour in the shower...... Thankfully, that isn't very often....:sly:

LOL
I spent the first few days after the meter was fitted rushing round chasing leaks. :D
Just don't ever try to get the meter completely still with nothing turned on - it'll drive you mad. :looney:
