Thats a not bad result mate, BT only offer up to 8mb.

Also try www.speedtest.net

Thats not a very good site, they don't have the bandwidth to do high bandwidth tests. It only registered 4MB speed for me, but on other speed test sites I get over 4 times that

Your speed is only as fast as the person/site you are downloading from.

As Jamesmark says the site you're downloading from is the key here. Speedtest.net is one of the better ones for testing your current connection, but as a guidline your one is about the same as a 4MB download, 0.4MB upload

On high seed/peer ratio torrents I get higher results than even the speedtest site (20MB download can easily be maxed out)

Divide by 1024 to get Mb or divide by 8192 to get MB.

your better going off to a fast server and seeing what transfer rate you get for the download, a fast server with a big file here: http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/games/cellfactorrevolution_install.exe (860 mb) you don't have to download the whole thing, just run it for a minute or 2 to see what your are getting.

Scotster

They aren't really fast enough either. I'm only getting around 900k with that file.

Your connection sounds like mine and infact never maxes out, So i use a download manager which makes about 10 simultanious connections for the download and maxs out the avaliable bandwidth.

You need to look at what speed you are connecting to the exchange at. If you have a router you can log in and it will tell you - modem should tell you as you connect.

This sync speed will limit your download rates. Generally the further you are from the exchange the lower your sync speed will be.

Test what it is now, then remove the face of your BT master socket (if you have one) There will be a test point in the back. Try to see what speed you connect at from there. If the sync speed jumps up then you've got poor lines inside your house. If it makes no difference the problem is line quality outside your property.

You also need to try a different filter, and if possible another router or modem.

One problem can be is that when you first have broadband BT run a series of tests (usually lasts around 10 days) during this period they test for the fastest stable speed.

I had a crap filter on during this test, which meant I had similar speed results to you.

I contacted my ISP and 'pursuaded' them to do something about the performance - it looks as though BT re-ran their tests as I now get 5000-6000 kbps (instead of 300-400kbs)

5 miles is a long way from the exchange, I suspect we're around 6 miles and are lucky to get 2Mb.

As thorin said that is quite good for 5 miles away.

Your 10mb connection is that what you are gauranteed to get or is upto 10mb? As never heard of a BB to gaurantee speeds.

I am on BT 8mb and get ave 2mb but they do advertise upto 8mb.

I rarely had 10 mbit (around 700k a sec downloads) when I was in Bedfordshire, upgraded this weekend in Reading to 20 mbit, and now get 1.2 meg a sec, did that test last night too and that was hitting 18000kbps. So still not 20mbit but damn near.

Almost right, 1024kb is 1mb. If your paying for 8mb then you should be seeing around 8000kb. As James said though, that almost never happens. Around 2000 is the norm from 8mb lines.

I'm with Virgin and i almost always get the top speed, cept when they are throttling. I have 20mb and i get around 20000kb/s. The best i have seen is just under 22000kb/s.

For real money you need to divide your figure by 8 though. 1024kb/s = 128KB/s which is 0.125MB/s. My 20000kb/s is 2500KB/s which is 2.44MB/s.

You're getting confused, your download speeds are measured in megabits, not megabytes, so 1 mbit = 1024kbps not 1024 kb (kilobytes)

Your really going to confuse him with that lol. To differentiate between bits and bytes you need to use a capital B ;)

Kilobits = Kb
Kilobytes = KB
Megabits = Mb
Megabytes = MB

I posted that already though.

Are you not in a cable area? A few people i know have went with virgin just for the broadband.

Allegedly its to become 50Mb late this month. Will wait and see though.
