Just realised... better not post this just yet :)

Does anyone have any idea if my car is written off, how long the insurance co take to sort it out, and what I can do about my plates? I know I have to get them off there somehow....

If the car is still taxed and MOT'd I think you can just apply for a plate transfer in the normal manner, and the wreck (sorry to put it this way) just gets a period plate reassigned by DVLA. If it's then written off, the reassigned plate goes back into the pool. My local DVLA only inists upon seeing the donor vehicle about 1 time in 10, so I think you should have a decent chance to get your plates off. Just my two penneth. Every insurance co is different, worst I had was 6 months, depends on the assessor involved.
