Calling Matt Harwood!

I have just taken the factory front speakers out of my doors (3 hole design) and want to fit these cheapo Sony XPLOD ones that have a 4 hole mounting.

How can I do it as there is nowhere to drill new holes. Do you offer any kind of adapter plate?

I would get some adapter rings made except there is that little meshed thing (port?) that would get in the way.

Any help would be appreciated as driving with my door cards off is getting very annoying and I'm having my NUR spec fitted on Saturday:eek:

Don't worry about getting some speakers fitted, you'll be driving around with the stereo off once you get the NUR rumbling....

What size are your new speakers mate - and have you still got the big plastic holder thing for the old speaker in the doors?

The new speakers are standard 10cm Sony jobbies, and yes I do have the orignal grey plastic speaker box fitted.

P.S Outatime - :D

I've read on here that some folk replacing a 10cm speaker simplt self tap a mounting screw into the existing plastic sound box mounting. Aparently it does the job :)

Ah - can't help ya then - I fitted 17cm jobs up front and binned the plastic thing!

I'd do as patrick says and self tap though!

Yeah I would but the point at which I need to fix the speaker to something there is nothing there. It sits past the plastic thingy!

DOH!

Superglue it is then:baa:

I ended up doing that when I put some new front speakers in my jeep.

I spent ages trying to make some nice speaker mounts, first out of wood, then aluminium. In the end I gave in and UHU'ed the speakers in to the dash, they sounded fine but I hope the bloke I sold it to never tried to get them out...

:stupid:

Exactly what I did! :D

If you look closely, there are only 3 screws holding the speaker in place. Just used self tapping screws and it held tight. No rattles, nothing. Its not professional, but it gets the job done and sounds great!

That's about the size of it!

We would use some sealant tape around the seat of the speaker to ensure it's airtight, but that the only difference from what SG's done. (And I'm not sure if it really makes that much difference, more of a precautionary measure really).

Yeah I was wondering about the small gap. I surely wont sound as good if the air is allowed to escape around the speaker.

I'm sure when I looked the other day when trying to fit I couldn't mount them as suggested but after seeing the attached photo I think I may be wrong. Will have to have another look.

I ight still try and make an adapter out of 4mm hardboard though, if it can get some at the weekend (harboard that is!):)

Cheers for the input guys:cool:

We've done a few 4" upgrades and not had a problem yet, but there's always a first time.
Making an MDF spacer would definatly solve the problem, make sure that's bonded to the OE box in some way, because as you said, any air leaks will certainly hinder performance without doubt.

Cheers Matt, it's quite funny really, I'm going to all this trouble and effort and the speakers that I am fitiing in are Shit anyway!!

But having said that they were free so can't complain. Comments received Matt, was thinking about using that rubbery window sealer stuff (cant remember the name of now) to seal them to the OE boxes.

Are the Sony XPLOD speakers any better than the stock ones, would I be better off just replacing the fronts with Standard Toyota ones?

I can't honestly think of anything that you can buy, that's worse than Toyota stock speakers!

The Sony speakers aren't too bad. Good value for money, that's for sure.
