I would not have the seals done without removing the head, I had it done myself last year and did some asking around before hand and it is recommended that the head comes off

I vaguely remember a thread discussing the various ways of doing this but couldn't find it.

Obviously I've done mine before keeping the head on, as it's a lot easier to do.

I'm interested to hear the reasons why you would remove the head? Seems like a lot of disturbance, cost and risk of future issues.

In an ideal world I would say yes remove the head, as it gives you a chance to have a poke around to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary. But it's getting more and more difficult to find quality Supra specialists, and I'm not sure who I would trust to remove the turbo's, the inlet plenum, then the head and then piece it all back together without fecking something up.

Plus, personally for me, it seems a bit strange to go through all the effort of taking the head off for all this. In my mind it's a bit like removing the turbo's when you do an air filter change.

Without removing the head, it's probably about a 4 - 5 hour job. Removing the head, 20 hours at least.

We've just done the valve stem oil seals on Gaz1s car but the engine was out anyway. So we took the head off, completely stripped it and then run it through the chemical wash twice. Then rebuilt it and put it back on the block with all new seals etc. Had a good look at the valve seats and felt it wasn't necessary to recut them and then reshim the cams in.

I seem to remember a post by CW about the proper way to do the valve stem oil seals, just can't seem to find it :search:
