What's the correct way to join two lengths of armoured single phase mains cable below ground in wet soil, anyone know? Thanks.
you need big chock blocks and resin the proper way is to get a clamp/resin pack
Dude what have you done? I am a sparky what you need to do is go to a wholesaler and ask for a submarine joint, for the size of cabe you need, it will look like this,http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Images/Products/size_3/SWJK1X.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Cable_Index/Joints_Resin_Filled/&h=475&w=600&sz=116&hl=en&start=3&tbnid=kRzhDjSER8sCXM:&tbnh=107&tbnw=135&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dunderground%2Bcable%2Bjoint%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den Thats the resin he is pouring in,
Hope that helps

are extending the cable or something to another bulding or have you gone and put something through it? if you were closer to me i would come and do it for you, doing underground stuff is great, espically when your in the trench and its raining and your up to your kness in mud!!

Yeah thats the jobbie or as richie said if you can join near a building or somewhere dry you can use a decent ip rated metal clad box of sorts.

Thats one part i dont miss! not being able to feel your hands trying work with big armoured. But Armoured was my speciality when i was a full time sparks bfore my current job.
But give me a bit of flex any day.
Done some work in holland wiring a factory and they use MASSIVE flex in trays instead of armoured, that was nice.

I could only get cable in 100 metre lengths at the time, so need to join 4 rolls of it at least, thanks for the info, wish I'd waited for a longer roll now.... Those things are expansive!

400m cable run! bejesus!!! have you got the cable now? it might be worth talking to the electricty board to see if they have enough to do the job, because doing 3 joints is going to be expensive.
also not wanting to teach you to suck eggs but have you considered the voltage drop that you are going to incur over that distance? thats a long run.
just something to bear in mind,
richie
